Patience is a key factor in good poker playing.

In addition, it requires a great deal of self-discipline to maintain patience.

So, for all you newbies who want to inprove your game, add that in. Patience is an emotion that requires constant and consistant work.

I know, last nite, I lost patience for reasons unkown and played badly in several games. (I usually play poorly most of the time. But, this time even worst that usual) Reason for this Thread: to help you and myself also.

Good luck,

mange

Yep its a big key, even top notch pro's lose their cool as the Ivey video thread showed. The worst part is sometimes being patient does not always pay off lol. In a matter of five hands I lost with top set on the flop twice today. Well needless to say it will be free rolls or nothing for me the rest of the day online.

As a newbie I know that patience is probably my biggest concern. In my head I know the hands I should play. Problem is that it's sometimes too easy to justify playing hands out of position and I do this because of my impatience and desire to just play.

I have patience till about the middle of the 2nd hour of a tourney, then I can't seem to let the big pairs go to the pushy big stacks. I know they will play suits w/rags heavy against smaller stacked players too. Double up or bust out, seems my luck fails in these situations.

FO SHO!

I made a thread a few weeks ago asking "What one piece of advice would u give a NOOB?"

https://www.cardschat.com/forum/learning-poker-57/what-one-piece-advice-would-you-135173/

My own peice of wisdom... probably my ONLY peice of wisdom... PATIENCE!

This sentiment was echoed by just about everyone else on the thread!

When I play badly... it is generally because I have lost patience and end up doing something STUPID! It is proving to be the most difficult part of the game to master... FO SHO!

Things that can cause my patience to run out or that put me on tilt include, folding marginal hands in mid-position that would have won me a large pot, being dealt nothing but rags for 2 hours then when i get AA everyone folding to my big blind, winning several hands in quick succession and thinking i am untouchable, players winning and showing a liking for weak or marginal hands so i lower my starting hand requirements and get caught out.
The list above is about only poker, we have other issues that can affect our play, things in our day to day lives, like family, financial or professional problems.
The more we play the better we become at controlling our mental attitude and this can be of use in our non-poker life, this said we will all have bad days when things seem too much and these are the times when the decisions we make can be suspect or we may feel as though things cannot get any worse and decisions we make are not important, this is a mistake, the decisions we make in these times of stress are at least as imporant as the daily choices we make, i would say more important. In poker this is shown more clearly and we immediately see the results of our poor decision making. The players who can see they made a mistake, learn from their error and not allow the fact they made a mistake to affect their future play will have greater success.
Good luck buddy.

I agree. Learning the basics of poker isn't hard, learning to play tight-aggressive/solid is easy too. Having patience and the self-discipline to play solid comes harder for many people. These are two attributes I still need to get much better at. In sngs, if you are not patient, it can kill your net ROI. Late game, blinds are huge, and there are huge swings, people are playing looser, chip leaders often donk their place. Why not save the chips you donked early game, and save them for later game where ace rag becomes more playable? There's a big difference between learning the principles, and practicing them. I just need to practice them :)

I waited to post this reply...I think the reply is 12% better now than it would have been.

I also live in Washington state... so I am still waiting for my states online poker laws to change.... thus I have to be patient playing live as the fish drink their drinks, act out of turn, and forget that the action is on them

Early on I was givin this advise and has really helped me. It is hard to keep throwiing those mediocre hands when it seems like you havent been giving anything in forever, but the ebb and flow of the game does have its rewards. when you still have chips and are still in it to make the move when the cards come. Good Luck.

Thats true many people lose there patience when they get short stack they get desperate and most of the time that will end ur tournament

But when ur in a turbo trny like blinds increase every 3 min i would suggest when u have a hand go with it might be the only chance u get

yupyup...patience is a huge emotion and as much as I hate to agree with a movie about poker, Brad hit it right on the money in Ocean's 11

leave emotion at the door

Establishing and following rules really helps out with patience.

Also, if you are truly impatient, try a looser play style. You may experience better results. I am extremely impatient, and I find that I experience better results when I play loose aggressive and lots of small pots.

As everyone here as already stated: Patience is KEY to success. I especially like the post above me, because that is EXACTLY how noobies should be playing. Fold damn near everything, play your premiums only.

Here is my biggest tip for maintaining patience (at least it helped in my case):

MULTI-TABLE!!!! I used to do only one table, and even though I could CRUSH that one table, I wasn't optimizing my profitz. So a buddy finally convinced me to try out 4 tabling. Once I started I was HOOKED.

It's so easy to get down on yourself and justify playing rags OOP when one tabling. When you got 4+ tables open you usually got a decent hand on one of them so you can chuck them rags away. No need for any complicated bluffs.

Sure, at first you are going to play like a robot, but that will pass. When one tabling I would rely heavily on the tendencies of opponents that I would pick up on while playing. When I started 4 tabling it went away for a while. But now, I'm more used to it, and I get close to the same reads. Hope this helps. Good luck!
