I know a lot has to do with position and chip stacks and other things but I was wondering what everyone thinks about calling raises with hands KQ KJ K10 QJ and the like. I generally lay these hands down as the best I can hope for is a race butr at worst I am dominated by a bigger hand. I am playing to passively or am I right to lay it down more often than not?

Defininetely situational, and largely dependant on position. A lot easier to justify the call late in position especially if they are suited. How deep the stack you are calling also has a lot to do with it. There are plenty of good posts throughout the forums about hand selection, try a few searches:)

Great reply just the way I was gonna answer it.
I tis hard sometimes to lay these type hands down,
Just depends mostly to me on pos.,and my chip stack.
what kind of player I am up against, and how late stages of a tourney it is.
Personally I think against the right erson at the table,ie:the loose aggresive guy/gal,they are good cards to see aflop and possiblly take down a good pot with.

I don't get the paint thing, sounds more like HGTV or DIY, but the main question is are you playing too tight. Yes, I think you probably are, but again, as someone said earlier, it depends on the situation, your position, the other player, how deep is your stack and the stack you are calling, so many factors.

I recently made the same mistake, did not call an all in with QJ. Still don't know why because he was in the BB, and I definitely had position on him. He was a maniac style player, but for some reason I put him on AA or KK. Turns out he had AA, but I would have boated had I pursued my hand, plus would have eliminated him. Knew it would come if I laid the hand down and even said so at the time. That's poker.

Yeah, it's really situational.
If a habitual stealer does it to my blind, I 3-bet him.
If I think I can take the pot post-flop, I call from late position.

The biggest problem with these cards is that people like to play Ace/paint, so it's easy to be dominated.

K/J for example, is apt to give you a flop that has top pair and an inferior kicker. And to make a straight you *need* a Queen, and you *need* a Ten. Whereas, hands like T/J has a wider range of cards that can make the straight.

So, for the most part, in early position I fold. In late position I play them (sometimes 3-betting with them) under specific situations.

I don't like calling raises, period. Yes, sometimes I do it, because sometimes I forget or I am running scared -- or, sometimes, because of who I am playing/the makeup of the table. So, although I will occasionally call a raise with lower paint (and they do sometimes get you a killa hand), if I'm going to play them, I prefer to 3 bet it. Either you then take over the hand, or the other guy makes it clear that you are gonna have to get mighty lucky to win. In that case, it's an easy fold.
