Here's something I like to do for fun to test my skills at higher limits without risking a ton of money. I'll buy-in to a low limit Sit 'N Go and roll up until I lose. Let's say I buy into a $2 SNG and win. I'll take the $10 and buy into a $5 SNG. Now let's say that I got second in the $5 SNG, I'll take the $15 and buy into a $10 SNG. I'll repeat this process until I fail to make the money and then I'll start over again. It's a fun way to try higher stakes

This is called gambling, how about bankroll management and should always stick to it ? You're just wasting your money when you play in such a way, because that increases more the variance.

If he is having fun it is not wasting money.
I am sure he is aware that this goes against a bankroll management plan but some people actually play this game for entertainment and make their money in more noble pursuits and will likely get farther in life than people that only play poker to make money.
I say to each their own. :)

I'm sure you read my other post "Me as a Freeroll Player". I do get my bankroll on freeroll tournaments i rarely deposit and most of the time i don't roll the money i won on freeroll tournaments i spend it with my 4 kids...

If you are having fun and can still feed your family and live a good life that's all that matters...

I think the idea of wanting to try higher stakes can be very tempting, but its cost me alot in the past. I have come to learn that in poker you can't skip steps and jump ahead.
