So the other day I went into a cash game and the minimum was 80 cents so I went in with double that. Blinds were 1 cent/2 cents. And while I was waiting around for someone to come in this player came in with $1,000 which was exciting cause it was like wow look how much I can take from him. Thinking he was being stupid, but in reality when we started playing he was very aggressive so now there was the fear factor on my side. My question is should I have even bothered playing with him? I am very conservative. I am not that great in cash games. It’s nothing like tournaments. How can I get better? How much money should I have gone in with?

Was he a good player ? A maniac ? A TAG ? He clearly knew how to exploit his stack BUT,assuming he wasn't that bright, a nit approach could have taken him out I believe (well, a few $ of his stack at least )

I'm just curious. What site are you playing where someone can sit down with 1K at table on a .01/.02 cash table.

He goes all in for a grand. You go all in for 80 cents. You win $1000.80. Presto.

Fear factor ?? of losing losing a dollar ?? :banghead:
I don't think you should be playing when you are scared of losing a dollar which makes you play conservative. No matter how much your opponent sits with he can only win how much is on the table.

Thanks for the advice. I guess it was showing off. But I don't think the fear factor was for losing a dollar but really having "NO HOPE" as the fear. Lets be honest no matter what I have I could look on the board and worry about what he could have. And in reality he was taking advantage of the situation and I was aware of that but I chose to continue to play. I had the choice to leave. But no matter what I had it would never make me feel like its good enough once the other person raises because I was obviously short stacked. I couldn't raise ever to scare him out. Supposedly its easier to play 1-1 because sometimes crappier hands win. Its a more aggressive approach which I have taken on and severely lost repeatedly which is quite annoying. I have yet to perfect that aggressive play. And don't get me wrong I play dumb too. I try to steal blinds and get screwed over because I don't know when enough is enough. So lets call it as it was he had lots of money and overpowered the play. Cause he won with a pair of 2's. Like come on... Anything beat that.

Well you bring up a great point which you seem to have learned all on your own: you do not want to be short stacked at a cash table because people will push you around.

My forte is tournament play; I think my style is too aggressive for cash game play. IN cash games, you just sit around all day and wait for that premium hand to put your chips in with: since the blinds do not increase, you can do this with cash games. In tournaments, you can start out conservative but at some point you will be forced to become aggressive as the blinds increase. So the strategies for tournament vs cash game play are completely different. I have about 24 times experience in tournaments than I do in cash games (I've played 24 tournaments for every cash game I've played).

I think you may be mistaken in either the amount you bought in for or hte amount you saw your opponent have. I think for an 80cent buy-in the max you can bring to a table is probably around $5. So maybe you misinterpreted $10 or $100 to be $1000 (maybe because of decimal points) or maybe you actually bought in for more than just 80 cents.

Or, it is quite possible that this particular player you were going against was a real shark who had been there all day sitting at the table and just destroying his opponents (building his stack to $1000). Now you say you were sitting there wiating for someone to join you but couldt his player have been sitting out for a few minutes while you were at the table? Possible I guess.

In any case, your little story does teach one a lesson: don't go into cash games shortstacked unless you plan on just getting lucky!

I too am very new to cash tables & don't play them very often(Small BR atm)
I did play 1 a few days ago & sat down with the min buy-in of 80c.

The guy who joined me at the table (with the same buy-in) is a guy I keep coming across on my site. I've built up some respect for him as he is a solid player & we are both weary of each other when we are on the same tables in MTT & SNGs, so I was anxious to play HU with him.

But once we got started, I played agg & raised him PF every hand, the first few hands I actually did have decent hands, but since he folded to every raise on them I decided to keep raising even with nothing but rags. Although this is not the approach I would usually take, it payed off & he re-bought 3 times before giving up playing against me.

If you repeatedly fold out to PF raises, the guy will just keep stealing from you.
Remember that if your opponent is playing every hand then he cant possibly have the nuts each & time, most of the time hes prob playing nothing but rags ,but the fear factor has you folding out even when your holding ax, kx, qx or suited connectors, which are prob much stronger hands than he is raising you with most of the time.

In this situation you need to bite the bullet & let them know that stealing isn't a option & that you're not afraid to call him & play to the mercy of the draw. In HU conservative play doesn't always pay off, you need to play the player & the odds & not the cards your holding, especially in this situation.

With his buy in (1k, if that's possible;)) sounds like every situation was potentially an ALL-IN one. What ranges were you playing? In HU, my range can be extensive. You need to adapt to your opponents type of play.
My advice to you would be to get some more experience playing HU, where you will come across all types of players, but ye will have the same amount of chips to start with & so "the fear factor" wont be an issue.

All the best! :)

It could of been a misread of the decimals, but I was pretty sure it was ALOT more than a $1 or $10. It's been over a week now, I play on so many site I don't recall which site I did that with. I know it seems crazy but I know what I saw. But even $100 is absurd for a 1/2cents game. Anyway I get the point of taking a bite and just going for it. Guess that's whats needed cause even Ace high can win against his cards most likely. Can't win them all right. Anyway thanks for the advice everyone.
