I come across a difficult situation when a player over bets a pot on the river and it's hard to tell if he is bluffing or not. He bet the flop and check the turn then over bet the pot . Any advice would help. Thanks

Did you have any other info on this player? Did you see him do something similar with an over bet?

If you get the `feeling` your being `pushed out` of a pot, most likely your being bluffed, but not always:)

Check the board

He's just polarizing his range, either he has the nuts or he doesn't have much (bluff). Check the board to see what was the nuts in those hands.

If he/she often does it, call. Even if you lose it will tame him/her if he/she dares to think of bluffing you in a later hand.

If this is very unusual for him/her, I would p***y out because you are not gonna gain intimidation cred for the loss of chips as it was rare for him/her to begin with.

It's not easy to guess the bluff. You need to know how the opponent plays. And even this does not grant 100% of knowledge. Everything happens intuitively. But the best way to get away from losing chips is folding.

You never know if you don't pay. Sometimes bluff sometimes don't bluff. You decide depends of the situation. I think is more important see your hand your stack and the position to decide.

Normally in lower stakes games when the money goes in , a player has something.

In these kind of spots i generally fold if I have no info about the villan and the board is wet, if I know that the villan is aggro i might consider calling but ofc that depends on the situation

the biggest question for me is what do you have? are you going to call because you think you have the best hand or are you going to call to see what he really has?
If you don't think you have the best hand, easy fold. bide your time, if you think this is a fishy bluffer, your time will come.

In that situaction you should if you play cash games see how each player play or if it is tournaments just fold if you dont have best cards and try to get some average balance to win some good price.

Maybe not a bluff but a semi-bluff,gathered a coincidence of small and middle pair on the Board...

Go For It

You are thinking on a very simple level and should expand your thinking. First you need to be thinking about your position and your stating hand and what kind of player you are. if you are new player a tight aggressive style may suit you so going forward with that you will have good position and quality cards. Do you have top pair and kicker, mid pair good kick? If you open with quality cards in position, hit on the flop and the board is not representing river made straights, flushes, boats and what not you should not be afraid to call. You will not always win but a lot of the time a river shove can represent a busted draw. This is only thinking on the simplest of levels but can be a good place for you to start.

That's been my experience too. I'm usually quite surprised when I see a big bluff at the end. It happens, but not that much.

Can still be low pair not evolving into anything bigger overbetting.

To most fish bluffing is the same if they have medium or weak hand the only time it's not bluffing in their eyes is if they have top pair or something.

So in other words to many fish betting big on the river of a dry board with a low hit may make sense both as a bluff or as a maybe-his-draw-missed cryraise who knows what their mentality is...

As for sharks,.again, a bluff may not be the only time to call. If you have two pair they easily can be overbetting top pair so that you mentally would only reraise with 3kind or better. This is a move I myself have done on rivers of dry boards where I know I may well have been outdrawn, outflushed (higher flush) but want to instill fear into the opponent to not reraise with anything q or higher as the top card in the flush. This lowers my loss if we both hit flushes and theirs is just higher than my lowish one as they get a little cautious and call instead of shoving back.
