Hi all,
Sorry if this has come up before but I searched and got back over 500 hits for a would be answer.

Can someone explain the "logic" of a player, in a free-roll with 3000+ seated, taking nearly every last second to fold their hand?

It seems to me with a giant field you would want to fold asap so you can see more hands per blind level.

Thanks
John (semi pro lurker here.)

I hate when that happens, but it doesn't always occur because someone is intentionally wasting time, but because they are on a slow connection and are lagging badly.

Other times it is because they are multi-tabling(aka playing more than one table at a time, sometimes 12+ tables) and they are on one of their other tables and slowly making their way back to your table.

poker sites give players a finite amount of time to make a decision. Players are entitled to use as much of that time as they wish. This is the standard answer that any site's support will respond with should one lodge a complaint.

For those sites that provide a relatively large amount of time you may get players that use all of their allotted time every time as it can be a tilt inducer and/or believe it is easier to get ITM that way.

If you are one that gets tilted with this behavior then I'd suggest finding games with shorter time banks and/or sites with shorter time banks.

When this happens in the early stages it is usually because the player is playing in other tourneys at the same time. In the latter stages of games I have seen guys taking all the time they can get to slow down the blinds especially if it is getting near the bubble.

imho, players that do thislate in a tourney are doing it so ppl at other tables get knocked out, thus the slow player finishes higher in the money, aswell as imo they dont have confidence inthemselves late in a tourney, what I like saying to them is that the slower they take to fold will only make me counter act that by folding or playing instantly it is my turn, and I also try and get others at the table that dont like the slow play to do this also.
You must also watch out for these players if they call, as you can be fairly sure that they hold a strong hand.

slow play is all part of a strategy to get further in the tourney and in that size a field in the beginning its well worth it imo.probably like every 15 seconds in a tourney some one leaves so it does have its advantages not a big fan of it though have done it near the bubble .

Maybe a multi-tabler? I've seen people multi-table a bunch of different freerolls and buy-ins at one time.

I understand the concept, however I don't think it's all that valid. Think about this...

1) blinds do not go up based on # of hands but on a timer
2) more hands played per level = more chances for premium hands

Given #1 and #2, your best shot at hitting money is to keep your stack ahead of the blinds. The best way to do this (playing TAG) is to get more the most premium hands possible before each blind raise... especially when you get closer to the bubble.

The chance of enough players going out before you (and thusly increasing your chance of making it through the bubble) because you take 10-seconds longer per hand is probably not going to outweigh the # of chips you can gain by getting a look at a few more hands per level.

Not much you can do about it.

It can be annoying but who cares, if you let things like this bother you then maybe Poker is not for you.

On a close point.. I entered some stupid tournament on Ladbrooks years back where you start with 100 chips and 25% of the field qualify for the next level. The blinds go up so quick you are all in or fold.

I talked the table into letting the timer run down for every hand we had and by the time we played 1 hand, about 20% of the field was already eliminated.
I think about 7 out of the 10 of us went through.

It can be a good tactic in the right place.

Hahaha, man i totally agree with you, but you see the people dont see it
as you do. Imagine if everyone were to do that, then it would be a
smarter thing to wait it out. The more hands you play, the quicker a person
will lose his blinds, and in the spot where the bubble is about to reach you,
you dont wanna be the one losing the blinds, cause i mean every time you
lose a blind, you lose the chance to win that much more in a hand. Its
really hard to get your chips back when your low stack so basically you
focus on not losing their chips so quickly to be able to make the money
thats all, but yeah if you Knoww you are eventually gonna have to make a
move in order to get the money to be able to make it to the final table, then
yeah you should go quickly, cause if you wait longer, the average amount
the blinds will take from you in relation to the amount of hands you play
will increase.

Yeah I have a buddy that has satellite internet connection and he can't even show his hand if he wanted to, due to the lag time. By the time it asks him to show or muck they have mucked for him, everytime he has to act the timer is beeping at him. Some players just have bad connections.

I have Hughes.Net and it is only marginally better than dial up.I have the same problem, can't show, sometimes I'm stuck awaiting updates until after the cutoof for the tourney.. i've started connecting an hour early because it can take that long.

$60 Hughes net (basic)
$9.99 Dial Up

I'm about to go back to dial-up but does anyone know if you can even play online poker from a dial up connection?

Any tips appreciated!

slowing down so you can make the cut, hasn`t that pretty much stopped because when it gets down to a certain number all the tables are on the same time .I mean the next round of dealing cards doesnt start still ALL the tables are ready?

It's definitely an unsportsmanlike move late in a tourney but poker is not exactly about sportsmanship. But it's like taking a poison that slowly kills you, your potential stack size shrinks relative to others while at the same time the blinds increase. It's an act of desperation

The only time I think I would do this was if it was on the bubble and I was watching the other tables and noticed someone else was all-in and I was extremely short-stacked. Then I would wait to see if bubble boy was out before I made my move, to ensure I was ITM. I don't think it is "unsportsmanlike", but it is annoying as hell...
