Years ago Greg Raymer did a statistical analysis of online poker, exposing that there are far less actual outcomes using online algorithms than there are live.

Playing live is all about knowing your table and your own stack and if it's a tourney or cash game. I'll play junk hands all day live if the pot odds are right and/or implied odds are right. Also keep in mind that a lot of times people will sit and talk for hours and tell you all about themselves, so you get an idea of why they are there and what their goals are, which helps to know how I'm going to withdraw from that ATM.

Good poker wins, bad poker loses. Its that simple. That being said, comparing online to live poker is like comparing apples and oranges.

Most of the time when you are watching videos they are taken out of context. You will see on ESPN guys at the wsop re-raising from the BB with trash and the button folds. What you don't see is that the last 5 orbits the button raised the BB and he just got tired of being pushed around.

It is actually MORE important to play good hands in live games than online. You will run into a lot of players like Mikecouil1 who are willing to "play junk hands all day live". This could be because the "pot odds are right" as Mike puts it, or because they just get bored. If you want to be successful you have to play tight.

You are going to find that live poker is painfully slow when you are use to online poker. Are you willing to wait 30-45 minuets before you even play a hand? Just sitting around watching others play poker? That is what it takes many days. Then you need to be aggressive when you do get a hand. Make players like Mike pay to play their trash.

You may think that I could wait for a good hand and everyone can just fold to my raise. That is true, happens all the time online, not so much live. You will be surprised with a live game. I play 1/2nl and a 5x the bb raise (10.00) will get called by 1/2 the table. You very well may get 3 calls with a 25.00 raise. When you finally sign up for a live game, don't wonder off to the bar, watch a table and see what the room is like. How big are the pots, what is the usual opening bet, ect...

Best of luck to you, let us know how the live game goes.

I play a more selective game live. People are less likely to get too crazy when they can't hide behind a computer screen.

You should try to don't change your style but it's easier to play when you can hide your face and your emotions :p

A friend of mine! Playing poker you express yourself! Therefore, if you even have a whole arsenal of weapons in poker! You do not cease to be the individual! Therefore, all your game will be the same regardless of the online tournament or not! the difference is only in the structure of the tournament, but not your style!

I still see some guy who are just terrible online.
These days, the difference between live and online play is the delta of competition you'll encounter.
Live, sure, occassionally you'll play a guy who is like 80/5 FR. Even the weaker live players have a field day pointing out how bad he is. But in general, though, your loose passives won't be that loose/passive, your maniacs won't be that maniacal, and your nits will be...well, no, the nits will still be the Rock of Gibraltar. What you'll also get less of live are absolute crushers. I have a few friends in the live game that are dominant, but most pros I know are simply grinders, trying to play a solid 15/11 FR style (limit hold em), take a half a bet an hour out of the game, and go home. They'll play straightforward and won't go for soul-crush plays with any deep understanding of your range/tendencies.
OaTOH, online 6 max FLHE is full of some absolute morons (52/7, 80/52, 90/47, 39/0 are all guys I play against regularly) regarding the game of poker. Some chase any discernable draw until they're confident they are drawing dead, some constantly try to barrel you off a hand, some attempt to free card in position religiously. They all lose at a velocity I couldn't fathom (like -15 BB/100 type guys). But on the other end of the spectrum, you get LAGTAG crushboxes who just play their hands really well. They play a solid 30/23 - 39/30 6 max style, they go for thin value, they bluff, they take lines that can be indicative of a wide range of hands (meaning you can't make the exploitative laydown of QJ on J88-2 when the fish who just cold called your raise and called the flop suddenly springs to life on the turn). Regularly when I play higher limits (15/30 or 30/60), my table will consist of myself, 3-4 strong regs, and 1-2 total fish. Easily tougher than any live game I'll play.
So long story short, you'll come across more experts online, but you'll also come across more total idiots who want to slam $10k down and start flinging $.
