Hi Guys, this is my first post, be gentle!
I have been playing online for about 4 months now on pokerstars. I'm based in Northern ireland and there is a live tournament advertised locally, with 10,000 Euro guaranteed and 120Euro buy in.

My question is do you think it is too soon to enter these events? I've never played a live tournament event before, any advice?
Thanks

Michael

4 months of online experience is quite short but you also need to experience live games if you really want to go into it. Online and live games is so much different, so your online experience wont count much if you intend to join live games.
Ive been playing online since 2009, and my live game experience i think is not even 20 tournaments played, so when i play live i still get the jitters when i sat with those regulars who almost knew each other in the table.

Hi Johnny that is good advice. Recently I was staying at a hotel for our wedding anniversary and learned there was a big cash tournament on. I called into the lobby to observe out of curiosity and was amazed by the comraderie and knowledge of each player, there is obviously a cohort of regular players playing the circuit and the thought of joining in these 'open' events is very intimidating. I will give it a go though if I can build an online bankroll to pay for it ;)

Hi Michael! I entered my first live tournament when I was still a total noobie. I had only played online every now and then. The tournament didn't end well (obviously) but I gained experience and saw what it was. It was fun and gave me a lot of motivation to learn more about the game.

Johnny said well above that online and live games are so different, I agree. You have to start somewhere though and if you have a dream to try live tournaments, you now have a perfect spot for it. 120 € buy-in sounds pretty big to me for a first tournament but if that is something you can easily afford, go for it and have fun! You'll love it :)

It's too early for you to play at such tournaments. But you can play freerolls and collect for a live game that would try to play and not spend your money.

I strongly disagree. Collecting money from freerolls is a joke cause even if you win, it's still quite small amount what you win. There are so many people just pushing all-in, trying to double up, and not playing real poker. That is a waste of time. People can definitely take shots in poker if they have a good reason to do so and I think that in this situation, they do. Local poker tournament, buy-in that you can most likely afford if you have a job, urge to gain live experience etc. But don't get me wrong, this is just my opinion. I'm not saying I know it any better.

Hi Dani, thanks for the advice. I agree Freerolls are too random and reward is just not worth the effort. I'll try and get into this event if I raise the $120 and keep you posted on how I do :)

This term is too short, strong players take part in this tournament, you can rely only on the luck. It's your choice in any case, but I'd recommend you to train, to read the literature and surely to read this forum, it has a lot of helpful information

Great, keep us updated! Good luck to the tournament if you are able to go for it. Stay focused, believe in yourself and do your best. Go for the victory even if it is your first ever live tournament ;)
