Hey all, trying to learn omaha, which would you recommend me to start playing first -- PL Omaha Hi, PL Omaha 8, FL Omaha Hi, FL Omaha 8?

Play any other games? Hold'em? Stud 8 or better? I ask because some games are similiar (Hold'em & Omaha Hi, Stud 8 or better & FL Omaha 8 or better). If you're good at hold'em, PLO would probably be the most natural transition, but its still a very different game.

IMO is better Fixed than Pot, because you have less complex betting/calling decisions, and Hi over Hi/Lo because you have less complex situations.

If you're just starting out in Omaha, you probably want to start out with fixed limit Omaha Hi. It's harder to find a game but there is usually at least one going at the pokerstars microlimits, but the mistakes you can make by jumping straight into PLO can be very expensive (trust me, I know). Also, I would recommend "Farha on Omaha". It has 3 chapters: one on Omaha hi fixed limit, one on pot limit Omaha hi, and another on limit Omaha hi/lo. It's not much in the way of starting hand charts or clear-cut examples, but it does have some useful information, especially for the beginning Omaha player.

I did mention this in a previous thread but you should try the pokerstars freerolls which have a multitude of games to offer and then decide what you like better. I personally prefer omaha hi.

I say start with fixed limit hi, too. I prefer Hi to Hi/lo, as I find the lo element is a bit confusing, and I'm greedy and don't like sharing, especially with the worst hand. :D

pot limit is best, I would avoid low ball just because it is most similar to studs hi/lo and least similar to holdem, with the pot limit you get to feel the difference between players and improving my understanding in omaha has improve my holdem game by forcing me to become more disciplined

People are saying Hi is easier because you don't have to worry about the Low, but I'm pretty sure it's the opposite. Hi/Lo is pretty easy to learn starting out as all you have to learn is that you want to play to scoop both ends. If you don't have A2xx preferably with a suited ace you probably just fold and that'll make you money right there. In hi it's really hard to learn what kind of starting hands are good and how to spot all the possible draws which although exist in Hi/Lo as well aren't as big a part of it because you're looking to win both and if you miss a draw or something for just the hi it's going to be a smaller mistake.

Also there is less variance. In Omaha Hi people are going to suck out on you and win the entire pot. In Hi/Lo more often than not you get idiots who will call with long shot draws to only half the pot. So when they brutally suck out on you, you still get your money back and they only win half the pot.

Everything I have seen says that basically Hi/Lo is easier to learn and obviously in both forms limit is easier to learn than PL because you don't have to worry about bet sizing and pot commitment and all the other stuff applicable in a big bet game.

Try learning at the play chip tables for Omaha H/L. This is how I learned every game I play. No risk of losing real money and you can walk away anytime and start for real money. Play money tables is a great learning ground. Several books out there for Omaha and other strategies can be found online. Good to be well rounded with the type of poker games offered. HORSE is a mixture of many games so learn them all is my suggestion. X

Yeah,that's true.
Playing fix limit, you can stop when cards are not good for you and wait for the next hand, without risking all your chips.

I absolutely agree.
Pokerstars offers all varieties of omaha (freerolls to win some money :D). Try it and then you can tell us which and why variety you liked more.

Try NL O/8 or Hi. You'll learn very fast what makes for a good starting hand.

Limit Omaha 8 is one of the easier games to get good at. It's pretty much a starting hand game, and draw to the nuts post-flop.

Also an easy way to go broke..This game sometimes called suicidie or bingo or lotto.

Stay away from unless you know what it is going on:D

Thanks for the replies guys!
Right now I primarily play NLHE and also halfway decent at Razz. I will try my hands on Omaha Hi on play money tables and PS freerolls.

I tried Omaha Hi on a FT freeroll for the first time last night, and I received a pretty bad beatdown. It's really similar to Holdem, and I enjoyed it. All I did was look up the rules and join in (I was told to make the best cards using two of my own cards and three from the 5 cards dealt on the table).
