I read something today that I can't figure out,

"Sample hand: Ac 2c 3d 4h"

"When you have successive low cards you have protection against a card that counterfeits your low hand when one or even two of your low cards come out."

"Example: you have A-2-7-9 and the board is 3-4-8, at this moment you have the best low hand but if a 2 comes on the turn your low hand is A-2-3-4-7 but it is not longer the nut low.

If your opponent has A5 he has the nut low and nut high.

What I don't get is say I played with the "sample hand A 2 3 4", what is "the protection" they talk about ?

I think the example doesn't have anything to do with the statements. Remember that the more low cards you have, the less likely is that you will be counterfitted. For example if you have a 'naked' A2 meaning hat you have something like A29Q and you hit a flop of 578. If a 2 falls on the turn or river your low is now good as the other person could have A3,A4, A6,34, 36 or 46. On the other hand if you have something like A23Q, then if the two hits, you still have the nut low.

Unless you don't understand the example itself, it answers your question. It is 'protection' or 'insurance' that if one of the cards you are holding hits the river, that you will still have the nut low. You have A234 - Flop comes 578 - if a 3 turns, you are still good. If an ace rivers, you are still good with your 24.

Btw, what flint meant to say was "If a 2 falls on the turn or river your low is no good" (not "now good").

Edit: KD beat me to it. I believe you're right.

OK I was confused about the A 2 3 4 on the 3 4 8 flop, with another flop I understand the 'protection' when a 2 hits the turn.

You can think that you already used that protection: 3 and 4 came in the board, and you still have the nuts low.
Anyway, wasn't the best example to show that.
