Hi all

Started getting into poker around six months ago and I'm really enjoying it. I'm at the stage now where I'm beginning to realise how much I don't know about the game and the uphill challenge that lies ahead. I enjoy studying the game but there's such a mass of information out there I just get lost. I will read posts or watch training videos thinking I'm taking it all in but when it comes to actually playing I just find myself clicking buttons like a mad man lol. How did you guys study or take in all this information at the start of your poker journey?

Cheers

Stayed at very low stakes & played a lot. I am a tourney or SNG player, so protected somewhat from tilting away my bankroll. Couple of things, folding is a good thing while you are learning the game & when you do fold try to pay attention to how those still in the hand play instead of watching the board to see what kind of hand you would have ended with. Good luck.

Very slowly

Start by defining a specific range of cards that you're going to play.

Then once you've defined that range, then make adjustments to allow more hands in late position and less hands in early position.

It helps to have your range of cards written down in front of you. As you get better you'll be able to deviate from the list, but it will help you feel less overwhelmed and make easier decisions when you know that you are only entering the pot with premium hands

Once you feel like you have reached a plateau in knowledge or skill for your playstyle, search out advice from someone who has a different playstyle and try to learn the advantages and disadvantages compared to yours.

If you are clicking a ton of buttons odds are you are playing many tables with a certain range of hands and you may be missing value from drawing hands or 3 bet opportunities.

If you find that you are playing mostly the same range of hands all the time it's definitely worth it to take a little time off and study sessions where your opponents did well playing hands out of your range and figure out the probability and odds behind why they were successful or if they were just lucky.

As you can see, everyone has different strategies to learn. My preference was to read as many books on poker strategy as I could find. I read Brunson, Negreanu, Harrington, etc. I also watched a lot of televised tournaments and cash games to see if I could pick up any tips. I played a few live tournaments at the local casinos, then started to play online. I also had the benefit of some experienced friends who gave good tips. Then, it was just a matter of playing as often as possible and try not to lose my shirt.

Been playing for years and am still learning. With all the strategy books and forums out there, play continually is evolving. The best method to learning, for me at least, is by doing. And that means....getting in as many hands as possible. You'll find online and live play are two different animals.

A good approach would be to read some, then try to apply some of the learned strategy at the table. Discussion with other players (that you normally don't play against) is also a great tool

Yep there is plenty players that have good info. But that's not the way you want to learn the game. You are going to have to take one piece of the game and work on it. Then when you feel good about that problem, jump in there and find what works for you.

I would suggest to find a nice home game near you and get some live experience if that's not possible go to youtube, and pay attention to the pros as well as the odds.

A lot of it just comes down to experience. Preflop you can come up with a range of hands that you'll open from each position (open more hands in late position, less hands in early position), but postflop is just about being experienced and experimenting with different styles of play. Often I find that my postflop edge comes from seeing others make the same kind of play over and over again. I'll know what when someone checks the flop and then bets 80% pot on wxyz board texture, they almost always have a particular range of hands. So when I've seen a play being made multiple times, I notice patterns. Those patterns allow me to sniff out what my opponent has, fold when I'm behind, raise when I'm ahead, and bluff when I think I can get away with it.

Stay at low stakes and read all the information its a lot for sure but poker isnt a game to learn in a few days or weeks.

You should take some time to review your hands aswell. If you have friends which are playing poker aswell talk hands with them.

Cheers for the sound advice guys I'll take everything on board. So the term "poker takes 5 mins to learn and a lifetime to master" rings true lol

At least for me I actull enjoy studying as much as I do playing, so not all bad

You can study a ton. However, what really makes you better is putting in hours. You have to play... alot. There are no shortcuts.

Here is what I suggest:

Download Holdem Manager (current version). I don't know what site you play on, but you should be able to find a way to load your hand histories into HEM, and then start gathering data.

Put in at least 10k hands. Then you can post stats, talk about hands, etc.

You can go through all the hands you've played, and get feedback from other members on the line you took, where to improve, etc. Try to find hands where you won or lost large amounts, and study those hands first. Like if you get stacked with AA, put the hand (no results please) on the forum, and get some feedback.

After first 10-15k hands, you go through and look for mistakes. Then, you plug leaks, adjust strategy, etc. Rinse, and repeat, a bunch.

That is probably a good path to take. With online play, you can play a huge volume of hands in a short time.

Good to hear you are enjoying poker. I would say that is an important first step. When people are not enjoying it, they need to be able to take a day or two away from the game, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Also, if you are not enjoying the game, we make unwise decisions which usually result in the bankroll getting smaller.
