Would appreciate some advice on a new live game I've been playing.

I'm most used to online tournaments and offline cash games, offline tournaments are new ground for me. This one in particular has an oddity.

People rarely, if ever, fold pre flop. There was a hand tonight where every single person, 9 players, called the big blind around to me. I bet the pot, and every single player called :argh:. This was an extreme example, but it was very much the theme. Three bets, unless you went up to around 8- 10 BB's, almost never got any folders so almost every pot, whether it was bet into or not, had 4 -8 players. I'll admit this not only shafted my game but sprinkled sand in the vasaline to boot!. If I see a flop I like to do it heads up or with 3 or 4 tops. Playing against that number of people completely threw me.

What is the correct way to play here? Sticking to ubertight hand selection and only betting with great hands seems wrong because so often a great preflop hand against 7 players gets mauled when one of them hits harder than me. Raising the three bet to whatever it costs to get people off the pot 8 + BB seems dangerous. Limping is surely never the answer. One or two calling stations I can milk, but how should one play against an entire room full of calling stations? It feels like there should be a way to capitalise safely but I can't figure it out out!

Advice most welcome.

If it was a cash game, I'd do just that, safe in the knowledge that the value bets would even out over time. Trouble is, its a no rebuy tournament (£7.50, nosebleed stuff) and you get plenty of callers for a shove with almost any hand. Lets say I have the best odds there, AA against random hand, I'm going to win 80% of the time (and I won't be that lucky). I do that, what 3 times and I've degenerated my whole evening to a coinflip. 5 times and I'm 68% to lose on the first level, and thats assuming I get AA each time.

Folding equity really ain't worth much.

You're looking at it the wrong way. If I could get 80% 5 times on the first level of a tournament, I would take that EVERY single time. You don't look at it as a function as a whole, but each individual hand. If that were the case, if in a tournament you got AA 8 times and won each one of them, are you going to fold to a shove on the 9th and 10th times because you are destined to lose those 20%? No, you're going to call the shove/reshove and relish the fact that you're getting it in way ahead of any other hands.

If you have droolers calling absolutely everything, then do this every chance you get.

So the advice is to tighten up, wait for the premium hands, then shove with them.

Makes sense I guess. Although ak o is only about 60% against any mid suited connectors so I have a horrid feeling it will end badly!

I'll let you know.

If your hand was good enough to raise 9 limpers you HAVE to ship it there. Even if you had trash and you made a move by raising (which would be a mistake) you kno your getting at least a couple of callers. So it doesnt matter if there are 2 players in the hand or 9...you need to hit a BIG hand. And yes you're supposed to play "ubertight". It doesnt matter how many flops you would have hit. Try and hit flops in your blinds. If you have a tight hand selection then raising the 8+ bb that you said it needed wouldnt be so dangerous. Your hand selection slow grows as you get deeper. All you do til the money is avoid tough decisions.

I would have to agree with everyone else, when faced with calling stations, bet the shit out of your big hands.
