 Below is a copy & paste from a sticky thread in the Learning Poker forum. I attempted to search for a clarification in another thread/post & was unsuccessful :(.

NL$25 (or $25NL)= The $25 refering to the MAX buyin for the specified game. The blinds are defined as being 1/100th of the max buyin. So nl$600 has a big blind of $6.

Please be patient with me, I started playing poker live so whenever a b&m peep says they play $3/$6 or $4/$8 or $1/$2 or $2/$5 I know they're referring to $3/$6 or $4/$8 Limit & $1/$2 or $2/$5 NLH. I brought this thinking into my thread/post-reading understanding...whenever I saw NL$25 (or $25NL) I figured the person was playing $25/$50 NLH but apparently $25NL identifies the max buy in? I'm okay with that but then how does nl$600 = $3/$6, if I'm reading the above description correctly...wouldn't it indicate the max buy in = $600 (or caps vs lower case differentiates between buy in & BB amt)?

Yes, I'm easily confused :p. I'm now guessing the peeps I thought were posting about $100NL may have been referring to $0.50/$1 games? Aaaaagh...please help (TYVM).

I also thought gg = good grief (but that's a personal issue).

Yes you are correct. The $3/$6, refers to the blinds and the $600 is the max buy in or the shorthand way of expressing it. So 1knl is $5/$10 etc etc.

Thank you for the responses, it's greatly appreciated. So for online cash games there is a correlation between BB & Max buy ins? If I'm playing $0.50/$1 NLH than the Max buy in = $100 & I would keyboard the game as $100NL?

I think I see where I'm confusing myself, @ the Wynn:
  • $1/$3 -- Min = $100 & Max = $500
  • $2/$5 -- Min = $200 & Max = $2000
  • $5/$10 -- Min = $500 & No Max
so for that poker room the correlation is between the SB & Min buy in.

The usual max bi online is 100xbb - so $50 = 100 x $0.50, this is a $0.25/$0.50 game.

There are exceptions to the max bi rule - UB, for example, has a lot of deepstack tables where you can buy in for 200xbb, so for a 100nl game (i.e., $0.50/$1) you can bi for $200, but it's still 100nl.

THX for posting this thread because I use to also get confused as well, if I were to start a thread of a cash table I would identify as 1/2c, 5/10c, 25/50c, $1/$2, $2/$5 etc. Best of luck, TC :)
