Im someone who's new at poker, what tools do you guys recommend in order to improve, other than the articles on this site? I've started to play with real money on party poker, not doing well. Its been quite fun and seems like something I'd like to get into more, but I feel a bit overwhelmed at the amount of time to put in so I can learn to improve. :)

Probably going to depend on a lot of factors, like your current ability, the games you play, your bankroll, etc. but in general I think starting with some training vids would be the best bang for the buck if you can afford a subscription somewhere.

It depends as everyone learns differently. The most effective way for me was just to learn through teaching myself mostly. I'd review my hands and try and work out what the best line would've been. Any I struggled with I'd post on here. Some like to read books, watch videos, read articles, get a coach. recprd sessions and get feedback. I'd start with posting hands though as any recurrent leaks become apparent pretty quickly.

I improved my game hugely at the beginning when i read some decent poker books. However the best way to improve is to practice a lot...and not at high levels ...too expensive.

Learn from your mistakes. Play some freerolls and try different strategy. It won't matter if you get busted because its free.

While the relative weights will differ from person to person since, as previously noted, people learn differently, a mix of methods is basically certain to be better than just one. As a generalized simplification, away from the table methods are better for learning concepts, while at the table is where you learn to apply them effectively.

Start very basic. Don't read advanced strategies till you fully understand the basics. Play straight forward poker, raise premium hand, play in position, make large raises, etc. Don't give value to your opponents when betting because you probably are not on a level to small ball or play lots of pots a low price.... Till you get comfortable with the basic game none stop observe at all times even if you are not in the hand. This way you will see new techniques then question what you see on the forum to get advice about it.

I have been through a helluva a lot of resources, books, videos, training sites, coaches. Anything I can get my hands on. Understand that people are going to recommend to you what they are familiar with. Most have really not exposed themselves to a lot - maybe a couple sites and maybe 5-10 books at home. So this is coming from a guy who has expsoed himself to more than average but less than some.

Books - Best place to start is Phil Gordon then graduate to Dan Harrington. Gordon will help with basic concepts and Harrington will continue that and help with hand review. Yes, some of that info is outdated but it will give you the foundation needed to continue. After Harrington you can go on to Sklansky, Miller and the like.

Training Site/Videos - Hands down - Deepstacks University is the place to start. There are some great ones out there, but start with Deepstacks to get through specific concepts the fastest way you can. If you are aggressive it won't take long to get through their stuff and you can graduate on to another place.

If I had to boil it down to this (for the fastest understanding of the game) -
Get Gordon's Little Green Book and read 3 times
Get into Deepstacks U

Just these two things will set you up for some success but are only freshman year - just understand learning and studying never stops for those who are truly kicking ass successful.
