cheers been playing tourny poker for couple years i do well live and have had some good wins online but i advoid the ring/cash like the plague i dont know why really (hate to rebuy or reload) i find myself only going to ring/cash tables online to make my buyins for the more expensive tournys i want to play when i'm feeling hot or the cards are just coming my way. ii want to build my bankroll a little higher as to move up in tournys buyins .my question is....when starting out playing ring 6-man tables or 10-man which is the best to start my play has never been good headsup unless i have been playing tourny for a few hours.i dont mind playing a long time or against same players regularly.i hope i didnt confuse my question with usless babble

It depends. If you're tight, you'll probably be more comfortable at full ring where your hand selection can be closer to what you're used to in the early levels of tournaments when the stacks are deep. If you're on the loose side, you may prefer 6max where you're basically forced to play more hands than at FR.

if you are newer play 10 man to start. 6max is far more advanced and you will run into better players. 6max, especially online will get a lot of action pre flop because raise range is much looser since less ppl

Yeah full-ring is probably better for beginners, 6max is much more fun though imo

You could always play 2K hands or so at each at the lowest level and see which you prefer

I agree, full ring to start out even if you're not a nit, it'll be a cheaper learning experience as I don't think you'll get punished quite as bad for mistakes there. The action at short handed tables is fast and furious and good players will make you pay if you don't know what you are doing. Once you're comfortable and beating Full Ring, if the action is too slow for you give 6 max a try.

I think you will mostly find 9man online, not 10man. But to answer your question I would just play whichever one is more fun to you. I think most people just naturally gravitate to one or the other. It may have something to do with personality. Some people like the more robotic nitfest that full ring can be. Some people like the increased action and speed that 6max has to offer. Or you can just play both. Many high stakes players actually do mix them for increased table selection. I wouldn't really recommend mixing them at the micros though because there are more than enough tables going at either.

Trying some 10 handed first to get used to the game.

Or since you are tournament player, consider doing SNGs as a change of pace.

If you cant decide, why not try them both at 5nl. You will not lose anywhere near as much, while you get a great feel for both of the game types. You can then make an informed decision as to which game you prefer. And about the 10 man statement, as a stars and PKR player they do in fact have 10 man tables at stars for limit holdem, and PKR for all types of holdem.

Definitely go for 6-max.. full ring is for braindead morons who don't really understand poker and love rpessing fold. 6-ma actually requires some skill and judgement and I think is definitely +ev and you don't randomly start spewing because you haven't played a hand in a while.

Ignore any advice based on the premise that there's a single right or best answer that applies to everyone. Some people and their play styles are better suited to 6max, others to FR.

Plus there's the enjoyment factor to consider. If, for example, you try both and find you enjoy FR more but have a higher win rate at 6max, it's completely fine to decide to play either, or a mix of both. As a recreational player, you don't have to maximize your EV.

In addition, 6max is not the only way to play more hands. You can also play more FR tables. There's often a kind of an implied assumption of playing equal numbers of tables at once. But there's nothing that says you have to.
