I am a newish player to holdem. Started playing around christmas time. Absolutely loving it. Wish I had started playing years ago.
Basically, I play online microstakes and free tourneys on 888. Mixed fortunes but it's a learning curve that I am really enjoying, without having to remortgage the house.
Any and all advice regarding improving my game, books to read, videos to watch etc will be gratefully received.
I'm not looking to sell up and move to vegas, but I would like to hold my own when I'm playing online and maybe move up in stakes in the future.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Be lucky.

Fred.

I can't stand the graphics on 888 for too long, it is truly ugly avatars they give...
Good choice though, there's definitely fish there because it's not a poker-only gambling software so blackjack and roulette players turn up at the tables from time to time.

The most important thing I'd advise you is to have no mercy and expect none either. Poker is a game where even the dumbest, truly most undeserving player can make you lose significant amounts of money relative to your winnings that session in one big colossal suckout. Never ever underestimate the fish, they will slowplay three of a kind suddenly and overplay the river making you fold a very decent pot that if only you'd called you'd have won. This is actually why you should be cautious to even put any chips in the pot at all, the fishier the crowd the more aggressive you should think (so 'either I fold or raise A LOT'), the sharkier the crowd the more fluid your thoughts and passivity should become.

I leave you with a song:

Thanks RM........ I think.
I'm still learning how to catagorise players. Get it wrong more than right, but I'm getting there.

Slightly disturbed by your song choice. I've had less wierd analogies! [emoji15][emoji23]

Thanks for your input mate.

Stay lucky.

Hey, welcome to the game, glad you're enjoying it and doing the right thing which is to continue learning to go up in stakes.

Books wise:
Phil Gordon : little green book (beginner)

Daniel Negreanu: power hold em' strategy (more advanced)

Owen Gaines : poker maths (I was recommended this one recently on CC and it's great)

Loads of e-books available so great for when you're on the move.

Online: try watching Twitch (App) or as much poker matches on YouTube as you can find time.

I'd suggest the first thing you do is get a great grasp on poker maths, this will put you on a level above any of your friends / family home games and give you a great basis to start moving up.

Good luck!

Now poker is developing so dynamically that you do not have time to follow everything, but I started with Pokerstretegy there and free money was given.

Thanks Thenightrain. (Great name by the way)

I will certainly give the books a try.
Never heard of Twich, but I will look it up.
I had a brief look at poker maths. After about 10 mins the words started looking more like portugese to me!! [emoji15]
I'll give it another go.

Thanks for the advice mate.

Stay lucky

No probs at all.

Also if you google "shove fold charts" and look on google images you'll find some great charts which show which hands you should be pushing all in with when you get short stacked in tournaments.

Cheers

Thanks TNT.

I wanted to learn poker years ago but never got round to it. Once I started I quickly realised how much there is to it. Lots to learn, but thoroughly enjoying it.
I was a bit sceptical about tilt until I experienced it! Too easy to get into if you're not careful.
I'm loving the learning curve and with help from people like you and others on this chat, I know I will improve, so thanks again.

Stay lucky.

Welcome to this wonderful game of poker .... you do very well in searching how to learn to improve your game reading books, watching videos, etc ... you must know that in poker to make money is not easy but not impossible, and that if You are not well prepared you can lose a lot of money easily ... try to give a lot of emphasis to the strategy .... analyze very carefully the way the villains play ... there is the key to success ....

lots of good videos on youtube and also on twitch you can watch many good players live. also many good paid training sites out there. many of the books are outdated so be careful there.

Thanks TN4Y. I found the training sites a bit pricey. Been watching YT videos. Only heard of Twitch today so not tried that yet.
Thanks for the advice.

Stay lucky.
