Hey guys newbie here. I currently play online at bovada. Im a full time student and want to see if its possible to make a little money on the side all while having a great time. I've played for a long time but I really want to get serious and try to step my game up.
What is a good first step to take (good books, videos, etc.)? How much time is required to make it worth while? (if that makes sense) What type of games would be the most profitable for a 'beginner' sng's, mtt, cash? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks...

Going to move this to Learning Poker where you are likely to get better responses.

Hey and welcome to CC. If you think you are a profitable player and can make it online then I suggest to you that you start grinding micro MTT tourneys. This is a good way to start grinding online if you're serious because the payouts are rewarding considering the buy in. A lot of people hear that it is so easy to make money online but it's a lot harder than it looks. I am also playing mostly on Bovada after making a switch from merge poker and have had recent success in the MTT bracket. Stay away from cash games(a lot of sharks) until you establish yourself and feel you can play for higher stakes. Good luck!!

I will suggest you to read more here in CC forum , books or videos.
Playing only freerolls will not improve your game.
Read articles about the staring hands.
Good luck.

sit n gos might be safer for you starting out give yourself a bankroll to use learn the importance of position and playing solid.

Watch gripsed videos and study the cards he plays and from which positions - this will give you the foundation to start with.

30 buy ins playing micro STT's on a weak site should be a nice starting roll for a solid player. Maybe even take some shots at mtts. but keep them small and occasional

I would mix it up and play to see which one I'm comfortable with, personally I like s&g, i made the most money there but mtt micro can be a Great way to get the bank roll going. I usually stay away from cash and only play there when I'm taking a beating in s&g , mtt etc and want to switch it up.

I think too many people come into the game thinking they can make a profit playing. I would say the majority of players do not make profit. If it were that easy, there would be no one losing money. It amazes me how many people on here say they make profit. I don't think as many people that say they make profit actually do.

Just work on getting better and don't concern yourself with how long it will take you to achieve positive results. Different people learn and improve at different rates. As a newbie, you're at the stage where, on average, you can learn and improve most rapidly. But it's not the same for everyone.

If you enjoy playing, that makes it worthwhile in its own right, and making money is a very nice bonus. But if you're enjoying poker as a hobby and losing money you can afford, is that materially different from some other hobby that costs money but provides enjoyment?

one can play sngs if having a great self control and patience because although it could be very rewarding frequently it´s very frustrating instead

sngs, the variance is so high, the players there are very random, they play as if they are playing the last hand of their lives so they play double or nothing almost everytime, alliners are most of them,

however, if you have a good selfcontrol and a high dose of luck consider yourself able to play sngs, because by the other hand the buyins are low and the prize (if getting at first place) is high

Excellent point!
