Hi everyone.

I just want to point out that this post is more of a vent than asking for advice, but I definitely want the latter as well.
PLEASE give me any feedback you have in your mind after reading the post.

I want to start out with a quick intro about myself.
I picked up on poker about 2 yrs ago and thought it was all about bluffing after seeing the wsop on t.v.

I never knew about BR management, tilt, odds, fold equity, tells, etc.

I just played for fun. But, recently, about a year ago -- I started to read upon strategy for micro stakes, and the general things about beginning poker.

I learned some basics, yet my real problem (bankroll killer) was tilt and a degenerate bankroll management.

My solution ( or so I thought ) was to start with a big enough bankroll to reduce the tilt from losses in microstakes cash games.
It worked for a few days, and then I would get tilted (probably because I would play poker for days on end without much break time (8+ hrs until bedtime).

I would go to higher stakes and get owned by the sharks.
Then I would keep playing those stakes figuring there was no point in trying to grind out NL2 after the huge loss I had in NL50.

This crippling mindset, fueled with ego and an unwillingness to accept variance and the ridiculously micro limits I would be forced to play (due to experience and what I could afford), is still unfortunately present -- and I want to stop it.

I will no longer deposit huge amounts.
I will study the game more than I play it.
I will forget about the profits or losses, and focus on the quality of my decisions for each day.
I will stop obsessing over poker and admit that what I really desire at this point is not having a huge bankroll to blow, but a better approach to the game where I can prove to myself that the game is meant to be enjoyed and not feel consistenly depressed about due to my mistakes in handling my $$ and decisions at the tables.

My goals are:
1) next week starting with $25 bankroll
2) consistenly posting questions and viewing others' posts in CC.
3) stop degening away my bankroll
4) think of poker as something to enjoy, and not something which I am destined for.

Thank you very much for reading, and thanks in advance for any feedback regarding this post.

Sincerely,

WhenSheSmiles

Hey, welcome to CC first of all.

Why don't you give us some more info on your game; do you play cash, MTT's, spin and go's etc?

How far are you into studying the game? Any areas in particular which you'd like advice on?

Feel free to ask any questions, pretty supportive community here!

Pretty sure OP stated in their post what they play.... microstakes cashgames but has a tendancy to jump up in buyins (50nl & get owned by the sharks)... & then dislikes having to drop back down to 2nl. What part didn't you see?

gl Smiles.... sounds like you're on the right path!

That seems like a good philosophy to approach the game, the correct mindset is more important that we tend to think. Good luckand keep focused on your goals.

I play cash from NL 2 - NL10 , Mtt ( $0.50 - $1.00 ).
But will focus on NL2 cash because of my limited BR ($25).

Well I am still a beginner. But I know to not chase flush draws without proper odds, avoid gutshot draws, avoid slowplaying monster hands pre and postflop when connecting, value betting light when villains check on the river and I have top pair, preflop hand selection from positions, recognizing preflop villains range by bet sizing and position, identifying the LAGs, TAGs, regs, etc.

I think I'm well grounded for NL2 ...and maybe NL5 ..but further than that, I doubt it.

For now, I will keep track of the hands I play and will post any hands in which I felt confused in. I will keep you updated -- i really appreciate your effort to help me along my journey !! Thanks.

Good luck to you, and the fulfillment of your desires.

Thank you very much, I will remind myself consistently that the game is about enjoying it.

Sometimes you want to copy what others do, and that includes moving up stakes, becoming a hardcore grinder, the desire to be a recognized pro player, etc.

But that has lead me to bitterness.
It's time to relax, and get better at my game.
Time will tell if I am going to still have the same goals with poker in the future.
But if I am not even bettering myself in all areas as a player, those goals, if still present, will never be reached.

Alot of what you said is exactly how I've felt. However, I play higher cash games like 1-2 NL and 2-5 NL. I dont always have the appropriate BR for either.

I agree with your new approach. Don't focus on the negative. Set your life up so you can take your next shot, Improving as you go.

In my opinion...mirco stakes is a waste of time and can lead to bad habits. I have attempted online poker multiple times over the years. Never withdrawing. I am 23. I also realized how important tells and table image is. When playing online, you are at more of a disadvantage.

I recommend trying to master live play. Playing online only for reps or when traveling.

I have been wanting to stay on the right path but I tilt myself by playing nonstop.
I'm going to cut that out.

Thank you for the feedback, I will definitely keep up with this mindset and I'm sure poker will be fun for me again !
Many hours and hours grinding tilts me.

I will cut the hours I play, and maybe limit myself to play only at a certain time each day.

Couldn't help chuckle when you stated "50NL sharks" but you're actually right. $50NL online is a tougher game than 1/2NL live where the buy-in is upwards of $300. Online games are tough. My recommendation is go find a live casino and play.

I have tried live poker as well.

The first times I was a complete fish lmao.

Then, the last time I went I actually knew the few things I know now, and check raised someone all in when we were both over 100bb when I flopped the Nut Straight. I check raised all in because there was a flush draw, and given how the last hand I shoved on villain on the river as a bluff and he insta folded, I was hoping he would recall the last hand and think I have watched too much poker on TV and was bluffing with absolutely nothing. Unbelievably he calls and I am think OK he has a set or two pair ?? but no, he had the nut flush draw with the over card (ace).

He ends up hitting his flush.
I mean, In my n00b opinion, I think his call was a horrible one.
What was he putting me on? What was he beating if the flush didn't hit ??
What would I shove like 150bb on the flop when he has me covered??

I think I played it well, but thinking about it, maybe I could have check raised enough to have him pot committed, and if the turn was a safe one, to jam at that point.

Good luck. I like tournaments and have an idea of how many bullets I'll use and try not to go over. That way I don't get sucked in to blow a lot of $ in one shot.

I agree with all you said above.
I have the opinion that when you think honestly about what you are doing and put your plans in the paper, it's a really good sign that you have a good chance to do it.
Congrats and good luck! :)
