hi everyone. im a new poker player and have the experience to read owen gaines basics book (poker math that matters) and tri nguyens books (poker blueprint, let there be range, exploiting regulars) in order to know something up-to-date about the game.i think those guys know what theyre talking about but i dont want to read old poker books in order to get a fresh point of view. My questions are: Are the books ive read sufficient to advance and if u have ur own reviews plz express and if youve gone through any brand new practical mind-opening new stuff that should get my attention. Thnx in advance

I just purchased "Crushing the Microstakes" and so far, it has been a good read. The author is also a member here at CC and from reviews I've read, the book has some high praise. It seems that it is catered more to a FR game but the principles remain the same.

I'm assuming you will start grinding the micros.Micros are a much different animal and since you are just starting out, make sure to devote some study to those stakes.

There are some REALLY GOOD older books. Some books like are essential for understanding no limit play. If you assume that the information has to be new to be good, you are overlooking proven winning strategies that work as well today as they did 5, 10 or even 30 years ago. The game never really changes. People devise new ways to explain the game. The number of competent players changes. The format changes (live vs online). Aggression, basic math and people skills are always the winning formula. Read any book written in the last year and you will find the same information that was written before. You can refer to my earlier posts for a great list of books.

I'm reading Quantum Poker by Derric Haynie right now. It's the newest cash book I can think of. I actually think it's perfect for someone with a bit of talent who lack experience (maybe just became a break even player or is close). It is an ENTIRE overview from pot odds (briefly) to range merging to equity distributions etc

Learn the basics first. Unless you're lucky enough to be a prodigy, it'll take a while to rise up through the levels against increasingly more capable opponents. A key concept here is to learn to beat the opponents you're playing, then move up, rinse, lather and repeat.

Poker isn't simply a matter of whoever knows the most wins. Knowing / judging when to apply knowledge appropriately is also vital. For instance, against micro-players, advanced concepts designed to work against polarized ranges aren't appropriate very often because you need not only the appropriate situation to arise, but also for the opponent to be one who has polarized ranges - and there aren't many at those levels. Applying the concept against the wrong type of opponent can unproductive or even -EV.

it's not very useful
and can sometimes be counter-productive
