Hey guys

I wanted to know how many of you still get nervous when you first sit down at the tables? What do you do to calm yourself and play your best hands possible. I noticed that I have to win a few small to medium sized pots in order to get my confidence up then I can really to rolling. I've also noticed that I've become very superstitious as well while at the tables. For example, I took a sit at the table and I get 77s in middle position. My girlfriend calls during the hand and I'm contemplating what to bet. She asks "How much longer are you going to be?!" and right then I muck the hand!! Something just said get out of the hand ASAP! I finish the call and now I wanna see what cards would have been had I stayed. The cards were...5d 6h 8s Qs 4d!! Missed a damn straight! So now I ignore phone calls if I'm in a hand.

What methods would you guys suggest I use (besides drinking..) to calm down?!

Dont be superstitius it is bad luck :)
I dont believe in all that lucky and unlucky thing but sometimes when i suckout with worse hand and nwxt hand i hit the monster im reluctant to play it because i think that i might lost it because of previous suckout, same with pocket pairs, if i hit a set, next pocket ill be sure that i wont hit it, but i tend to play the game no mader how i feel that will happen. when i play live it is only homeu games and i concentrate really easy and now madder what are the distractions i'm able to play the same only difference is when im play for fun with friends and i drink little more i just can't focus on the game but then i just play so loose that i dont even care.

The one thing I can relate to is being somewhat nervous just when it first starts.

Even though I have been playing for years, I still get the jitters right when I am involved in a pot. As the tourney progresses I get comfortable as normal, until a huge pot is involved and the bubble approaches. But all in all, I am always fine!

I'm a person who likes listening to music. it's soothing for me. I don't have both plugs in my ear but i have one in and the other out so that i can hear what's going on at the table. But for me listening to music keeps me calm.

Also, I see you live in the great state of Texas, as do I, where do you play at live?

I mainly play at Winstar or Choctaw in Oklahoma or make the drive to Shreveport.....when I'm visiting relatives in Houston, I'll make a trip to Lake Charles. What about yourself?

I use to live in Houston and mainly went to Lake Charles. I currently live in Lubbock so I travel to Albuquerque when I can, but I'm moving to the DFW area in Janurary so I am looking at playing at Winstar.

The players at Winstar are pretty cool. I would definitely recommend playing there. I struggle big time at Choctaw so I don't play there as much.

I've heard good things about Winstar, so I'm looking forward to playing there.

I like to fold the first ten hands or so.... I want to watch the other players and see what type players they are. Unless, I drop a big pair I will just fold. It lets me watch the players and it establishes me as a tight player.

I don't get nervous any more when I first sit down, but I do get tense as the tourney progresses. If I start to go deep, I get a little more tense...someone said something about deep breathing and it makes sense to me, so I think that's the way to go.

My hands shake every time I'm in a pot so I shuffle chips or just don't let the table see it at all (sit on my hands). But this happens for both strong made hands and weak hands. I don't know if that's a good thing though. But I find that maybe after the first 20 hands or so, I feel a bit more comfortable and less antsy and jittery.

I wouldn't dare drink when playing. I tend to get too chatty >.<

I still feel nerves but i think it's down to the uncertainty of poker. You can't feel completely settled when you can't see your opponents cards. I'm no longer afraid though. It's a game.
And don't drink, period . lol.

P.s. I'm far less nervous in tournaments. All i can lose is my buy in. Cash, i can lose it all :(

I have one stupid superstition:
-Never move the table window after the start of it.

Believe me, every time i move it i start thinking that i shouldn´t have done that and it influences my play and a little bit after that i always get busted. It´s insane but it´s true.

Generally, interruptions in the middle of a game can be disastrous.

Nervousness?? never thought about it

I never thought about it before but I guess over playing mid cards and getting to aggressive with them, when I first sit at a table, is due to nervousness. Thanks, good observation.

I am superstitious. Before I play I usually do a couple prayers. It usually helps me. I really have had been having good results lately because of it.

I always have the jitters. Lately, I only play MTT's, so I am I get closer to the end of the tournament, I get increasingly nervous and anxious and worry about busting out. As far as individual superstitions, I don't really have any, but maybe I should start doing something like that so I don't get the butterflies so much. I've actually thought about getting a rabbit's foot keychain :)

Only time I get nervous and anxious is when I am going all-in on a huge bluff yelling FOLD!

Always feel jittery at beginning, both cash and tourney. Often will play extremely tight in beginning so this goes away. Not sure if this is nerves or excitement, probably little of both, so waiting helps to eliminate bad play which is influenced by this jittery.

LOL...that sounds like me right there! When I've been on a full out bluff, I've found myself mumbling "Goooo Awwwway!!"! I guess with my tight image at the table, people tend to lay down their hands down.
