So theres a guy thats shoved three or four hands in a row he only got called once by a shortstaci and turned over Q 6 off. Im in the big blind with pocket 9s and he shoves again. It folds around to me and I am pretty deep so is he at least 50 big blinda and he covers me. Should I not call here cus of how deep we are. I did call and I lost to a miracle runout for him. Let me know what you think.

Posted in wrong section of forum. Should be posted under poker strategy.

If it is a slow structure i say fold wait for better spot.
If structure is like a turbo or if it is a freeroll or micro buyin then call.

I'd wait for a better spot in these deep tournaments. Yes you are probably 70% fav but these guys wake up with monsters occassionally and why take a flip against an inferior player for 50bigs

He shoves Ace rag and hits, you are out of the game and he continues knocking people out till he doesnt. They rarely cash but they take out plenty of good players along the way.
You can fold and wait for a better hand and should be thankful that he is letting you see more hands at the blind level and speeding up the chance of you getting a real strong hand.

I find some players play poker like their sexual organ is on the table and they need to tell you how big it is with aggro play. Its usually a player from certain areas in the world where women are also seen as sexual objects and to be seen but not heard mentality. So let them donk off, even if you miss your chance to double through them,at least you did get not knocked out on a dumb hand early.

This. This SO MUCH. People who play like that are making a mockery of poker, and this is exactly what I mean by that. This IS the reason that playing super recklessly early on, or throwing all the weight of a big stack like that, is something I'm so passionate about opposing. They make freaking fools out of the people who are actually trying to play this game properly. Especially in tournaments where there's well more than just one or two of them in the field.

I don't risk giving chips to people like that when I can at all help it.

I think all this advice is wrong. Call him every day if you think he's shoving with crap. Yes, he may suck out on you, but calling is a winning play in the long run. You said it took a miracle runout for him to beat you. That's gonna happen sometimes, but you can't play scared. You have to exploit the idiots, not run from them.

It's not surprising that you'd say that, lol. I mean, you have a very aggressive (read: maniac) style yourself. And provided the OP is willing to adopt or indeed already goes with such a style, then yes confronting such players is a valid tactic.

Also, I was going to take issue with you bringing up the long run, but the OP never said whether the hand in question was in a tournament or a cash game. If this was a cash game (very plausible given the BB number) then yeah, call him all day every day. That's the biggest difference to me between tournaments and cash games--in cash games the long run really matters, in tournaments each tournament is its own short run and it's impossible to get to the long run.

I been trying to control my patience and folding to every shove. I can shove but done with calling shoves. When ppl shove online at least 65% of them are pocket pairs and A10+ so the draw always comes out crazy and most the time I see low stacks benefit. so I do my best to be in hands that has the draw complete for cheap. online poker has to many bad beats be careful and make sure u have the best hand always online before you call any shoves. Now if you feel confident to shove on a bluff or to steal a blind thats different. you just gotta accept the loss if your hand loses. Hope this helps in some way

It depends whether this is a regular speed or turbo/hyper speed tournament , a freeroll or a normal tournament , also how many blinds do you have , many parametres to think cause 99 is not that big so you might have to wait for a bigger hand , cause like mane foretoldhe might hit his miracle hand and send you home , but if you're really low on blinds, snap call .

Yes, it's different for cash games vs. tournaments. There's a lot more to take into consideration than what he posted earlier. But my point is that if you think a guy is playing like a maniac and shoving with any two cards, you don't run from him because you're afraid. Those guys are great sources for chips and you have to exploit them. If you have a really strong hand, he's shoved and you can get him isolated, that's when you call. You just can't play scared to lose.

Let me get one thing straight. I don't avoid that type because I'm AFRAID of them. I avoid them because reckless confrontation is NOT MY STYLE. My philosophy of poker is: don't gamble, gamblers lose. So I don't tend to go for lots of preflop action most of the time.

When we are talking about newer players the concept of playing scared is over used. I would much prefer missing the double up chance knowing that there will be another on the next table. Its a line that aggro players use to tilt a player into making a bad call, which means its usually bad advice.
Having confidence in my post flop means I do not need to play the edges to such a extreme and I think encouraging newer players to play this way will have them doing this to often and not getting those deeper runs they are looking for.
Learn the tag style first and then open up the more aggressive play in my opinion.

You r realizing him as a loose-bad player then you can start firing back with lower premium hands (not JJ+ but 99 or even 88) . Think about it, the opponent is weaker than he should be then why would you not abuse that weakness?

There is not enough information provided here to give a decent answer.
ie. some of the advice for calling may be wrong depending on certain factors/circumstances.

You need to give all relevant info. - - blind levels & rate at which they increase... all stack sizes of other players on your table (& what type of tourney... buyin level, approx. field size & payout (ie. top10%, top20%.. how are the payouts weighted... is it a satellite? etc. etc. etc.)

Other things.... how do we consider our skill level vs. the field we're playing in? vs. the table we're on? ie. are there lots of spots where we're able to easily accumulate chips from weaker players? (<< something like this would completely rule out snap-calling off 50bb's with 99.... imo someone suggesting its a snapcall isn't that well-versed in the game)

I think your call was good. You were ahead when all the $ went in...that's what matters.

Very easy call if he is shoving often. You are like 70% favorite if he has a random hand. Doesn't matter how much big blinds you have, it's an easy opportunity to increase your stack.

its an easy call there... villain shoves many times in a row so in most cases you will be at least on coinflip scenario or better. if you are not the last player to act you might fold pocket nines, however in this scenario the best choice is to call.

I'm no professional but....

For online poker, I been telling everyone I stopped calling all in preflop raises. I see what u saw all the time. Its okay for u to shove a get called but that depends on your position. Otherwise I fold everything but pocket rockets. Yes I even fold pocket kings at times. You still didn't make a bad call on an actual table you can do that but online is to dirty. just try your best to make it to the river for cheap then decide to make or take an all in. Hope this helps you.
