You definitely need to get a data tracking software like Holdem Manager or Poker Tracker 3. Once you play about 50k hands and learn what the stats mean you'll be on your way to better understanding your opponents play and your own play. I would recommend getting HEM because of the addon application Leak Buster, which helps you find where your loosing money and how to correct it. There are a lot of other tools out there but I would start with these. Good luck.

I never thought about using any of those and just stuck with the experience and after so long I tend to find out what I am doing wrong, this seems to be a everyday thing since I try to find something I did wrong so I can be better. I never had a day where I said "I played perfect today".

Honestly the best thing you can do is just study.
Read the HA forums here (and elsewhere). Work through the hands posted without looking to see what others have said. Post your OWN thoughts and opinions. Read any comments to your opinion and take any advice given.

Post your own hands for analysis. Avoid coolers and should I fold AA/bottom set/2nd nuts type hands. Concentrate on should I be value betting this river or should I check back the turn type hands. Don't only post hands where you lost. Post the hands you had to stop and think about during the hand or that you 2nd guessed after an action (not necessarily after the SD).

After you post a hand, let it sit. Give people some time to answer and don't feel the need to justify your actions if someone questions them. Do come back to the thread eventually and ask any further questions. If you disagree with someone that's fine but do so in a respectful manor.

Realize that you're going to have to work hard to beat the game these days. There is no magic software or advice. Even at the lowest levels there are people are working hard on their games. To beat them you have to be willing to work harder.

There are definitely no instant solutions to getting better at poker, but having invaluable tools to help you study your game will make you better faster. I have found the software that I mentioned above to do this, and have seen the results in my bankroll. You can compare it researching something at the library or on the internet. Which one will get you more results faster? I know a library card is free, but I think paying for the internet is worth it.:)

Just to clarify, my post wasn't meant to be a software bashing post. I use PT3 daily but you have to actively USE it to get the most out of it. I'm just saying don't expect using software to be the answer to all your problems.

For tournaments, tracking programs aren't very helpful to an observant player. Tournaments are all about making the proper moves depending on the stage of the tournament and stack sizes, and those change throughout the tournament. Stats are static, and tournament structure is dynamic.
That is, he might VPIP 18% overall, but how often is he VPIP'ing with an M of 100, or an M of 30, or an M of 10, or an M of 4?
How does he adjust his play for bubble play? etc.

In a ring game however, people are almost always deep stacked, so the situation doesn't change as much, so having information on their habits tends to be more relevant.

I have to agree with SP, but it still doesn't hurt to have the stats there in front of you.
Don't make all your decisions based on the tracking program but don't completely ignore them either.

I never used software, didn't need to. My game was so bad that everything needed to be fixed. So I read and studied a little bit then analyzed my hands to see what I needed to fix.

Analyzing each hand after the fact was a huge eye opener because you are not under any time pressure. It's quite an eye opener.

Exactly THE reason to have the tracking software
After each session, you can go back and view all your hands
Early position, mid, late.
What cards were working for you.
How often you called folded raised etc.

And the software can integrate ALL those stats for all your games into one database.

If an elephant stands in the middle of your living room would you need someone to point that out, or would it be that obvious?

why be so mean? Leo made a very valid point, and made it nicely..........

Not to mention that I believe the majority of players would agree with what he said.

Not being mean, but when you go through the cyle of: study, play, analyze, and discover; the holes in your game are extremely obvious (ie small blind donator, opening the pot with a limp, etc).
