The title clearly reflects what this strategy article is about as poker, despite what many beginners believe, is a game where short-term results are less important than decisions to get good results in the long run.

What do you think, focus on money is a mistake?

It is necessary to be cautious not to focus only on money, but also on the game as well, because if you think about money alone you get too much, and if you do not analyze the game you lose a lot, then make small bets and always focus on the gameplay.

This prospect of short-term play is very common among beginners both online poker and live poker, as it is difficult to think long term when you make a profit or suffer losses in each hand.

You must combine this. If you do not have an endless bankroll or play not on the play money, you have to keep track of your money. But you also need to improve your game and make the right decisions. To concentrate on one thing is to lose in the end.

Focusing on the money is what bank roll management is all about. Focusing on your decision making is how one gets to the point where one can make money.

In all hands when playing poker you have to make a decision, whether to withdraw, accept bets, raise or even have to play all the chips. In the long term, the right decisions have positive consequences, but in the short term these may not bring good news, so looking at whether or not winning a hand over a short period of time is not a good option.

Of course you play for money, but you have to look at the final results. By saying this we are not talking at the end of a day, but a month, even a longer period of time, because if not, the results depend largely on luck and not only on the right or wrong decisions.

I completely agree. Money should ideally only be a question for proper BRM. Otherwise making the right decision every hand you play is IMHO more important.

Focusing on the money is like the tail wagging the dog. It is arse-about-face and is the wrong approach. The whole concept is result orientated, which is a short sighted one. You need to be process orientated, because the right process produces better long term results. It is also more easily refined, and improved, and becomes more repeatable over time.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager said something like this....

He would rather lose a game 2-0 and understand exactly what happened, than win 2-0 and not have a clue why ....

The biggest decision you have to make is to determine why you are playing. If you play for fun, you are not worrying about the money or the decisions, and your play is probably random. If you play just for the decisions, you might lose money because variance kicks you in the butt. If you play for just the money, you may make bad decisions because you get greedy or too cautious. I agree with those who are serious and understand that making the correct decisions is critical, but that this also requires good bankroll management so you can ensure that you can recover from those bad beats.

Very interesting topic! I think the game is winning is a priority! I play poker to win money, and if I want to get enjoyment from the game, I'll take a whiskey, will meet with friends and we can have a comic game. And every correct decision in every game situation you are closer to success, and winning money!

A good advice is to stop looking at the money because it is very easy to have fluctuations in short periods of time, being able to lose money playing well and, on the contrary, win following a completely wrong strategy.

You must be careful with your money. But poker is much more than just money. Of course, it becomes a lucrative long-term game, with many dreaming of big hits, but that's not how poker works.
You must be determined and focused in the long run to become profitable.

I think it's not wrong to think about money, but if it's just for the money, it's not worth it, after all we have to like the game in the first place!

We are together!!!

There are ingenious poker players who do not care about money and if you are one of them then everything is all right :)

I agree, it's nice to win money of course but the important thing is to keep learning and improving, the money will then follow.

As in real life, people try to solve problems immediately without trying to know the causes of such problems or if they really exist. To give an example, when a person has a headache, he takes an aspirin right away without even thinking about why he has a headache.
In poker the same thing happens, a person loses some money and quickly tries to recover it with movements that may not be totally fortunate. Perhaps it is better to think that the money has been lost simply because of bad luck, but that the movement was well done, that helps not to make hasty decisions.
