I understand you need a basic concept of odds, pot odds, etc to do well in poker. I want to know how many of you guys actually base your game on mathematics and how many do not. I incorporate math into my game but I do not strictly abide.

I'm pretty strict to pot odds. I always calculate how many outs I have to win, and call when the odds are there. I also use Odds to determine my bet amount if I think my opponent is on a draw. I also stick to some personal mathmatic rules when set mining.

Math, ehh... I focus on pot size, betting patterns of the table (what will get the right number of callers with out scaring them before I snag a few chips), and what outs and potential hands the table has compared to opponents bet size.

Almost all players use mathematics in their game without realizing that they are doing so.

Math is a big part of my game but I like to use feel and reads as well to help me make some of those tougher calls.

I do use math in my game to make some decisions but I don't solely base all my decisions on math. You are going to have decisions in poker were you won't have the right odds to call and that is when you just have to go with your gut feeling to make the correct decision

Poker is a technique game that involves the ability to read your opponents to get an all-around advantage, but also has a certain percentage of luck, and involves mathematical calculations in which you must know what your Probability of winning in certain situations. I use math a lot and I rely heavily on the size of the pot.

For calling range and for my bet size, I use my mind to calculate, if I am EV+.
But if I am the aggressor, I try to play my opponent.

For no limit poker, being aware of the maths is important, but implied odds are so much more so. Limit poker, there's no substitute for knowing all the maths.

Math is important, especially as you are trying to learn your opponents. Once you get a feel for your opponents you can use both pieces of information to calculate ( damn, a math term again) what is your best play.

MATHEMATICS IT IS STILL NOT EVERYTHING, the main skills and sense of play come only with a lot of experience from a year and more !!!

Well ive been playing the game for far too long based on feelings alone refusing to calculate any math besides for how many chips i have compared to the table leader and the pot. Lol i realize now how dumb ive been seeing the replies to this math post. Ive always read about the different maths used in poker and understood the concepts... i think i usually just guestimate my chances of winning and go with what my gut feels, pretending im smart because ive read a little bit about poker... i promise myself and my fellow cardschat friends to start actually calculating like a good poker player should.

This is a great thread as it has got a lot of people thinking about how they play poker and the importance of "everything" towards making poker a successful event on your own behalf. Math is of course important, guess work does not work the majority of the time and knowing how much you are risking at the opportunity of reward or loss is essential...... however, there is also a whole load of other 'stuff' that one has to consider even before you consider your cards and the math involved.
