so a friend of mine wants to take me to the local dog track to play poker and he doesn't really play and he doesn't know that I play online pretty often. I've never played anywhere except online (barring when I was really young with friends) and was wondering what the major differences were to playing online vs live. Obviously the need for a poker face comes into play but I was wondering if anyone had any tips on the nuances of playing against people that are physically sitting next to you. Any tips and things to be ready for?

Thanks

If you have never played live before, I wouldn't suggest going to a place where locals play first. Locals can be pretty intimidating and if you show any weakness or inexperience, you can get overwhelmed easily. Try playing casually with some friends or family first and get used to the flow of live poker.

As for tips, look for behavior changes. For instance, if someone is a talker and looks relaxed most of the time, they may stop talking suddenly and look serious when they get a good starting hand. Look for the confidence that someone is projecting from either their body language or posture. It's physiological that when someone is excited (i.e. think their hand is good), they perk up or show signs of confidence. However there are some players who always act confident no matter what their hand is, so you have to have the cards against those guys and then you use their confidence against them.

And, you also have to think about your own behavior. You have to think about what sort of things you are giving away and how you can control situations with the way you are acting or presenting yourself. Basically, for live, psychology is much more important than in online poker.

There are drastic differences between live and online play, especially NL play. Limit is limit and the strategy is pretty ABC TAG style, so if you play limit then you should be fine.

If you play NL, be prepared for bet sizing differences, lots of limping and al ot of passive play.

I agree with the other poster. If the card room is full of regs, then stay away, especially your friend. If there is a local casino, I'd recommend that instead.

A good book that is recommended is:

Beat The Donks: The Biggest Mistakes Made By Low-stakes, Live-Action No-Limit Hold'em Players

"Caro's Book of tells" is a great source of info as far as physical tells go. There are a few videos on YouTube (not sure if the entire video is or not though) you can look up and give a once-over.

takes a little while to change from online to live play , people will play 2nd pair a lot and limp more than online , you will get paid off with marginal holdings , dont follow their example of limpin in hoping to hit like the the others ,its actually amazing how bad these live players can be (especially round my way) im hardly a pro but i still am left stunned at some of the play i see at my local casino , they are sooo much looser and generally end up buying in again , if you play ABC solid poker that seems to be a good strategy for live , i love live poker ,i get paid off on marginal hands that id never play online , plus you have so much more information ,but keep an eye on every plyer at the table watch how they act and you may see some "tells" i get to play actual poker instead of onlines watered down version , remember poker is a game between personalities and humans ,online its sometimes easy to forget this ,live poker will give you a lot more info than you initially realise , given the choice now id take live poker over online 9 times out of 10 ,online is good too because im can play in my drawers ,smoking eating a bowl of cereal , they just dont let me do that down the local casino ...i get down to my drawers soon as i ask for milk for my coco pops they throw me out

Go go go!

Sit tight and have some fun (Dont drink... to much). After all, what's the point in playing if you don't enjoy yourself. What ever amount of cash you take, right off as you would on a night out. If your willing to put up 300 notes on the table then i wouldn't worry to much. Just roll. Test the water and feed the sharks a little and then become the megalodon.

I find it more difficult going live to online.

Anyway, I have always found with live play that being consistent and being confident when you raise, call and even fold. Fold knowing you were right to fold even if you have given up AA.

I start with an MTT at your local casino as you get a good mixture of loose and passive plays plus you can read the bad players and enhance your reading skills from there. Once you move up to the cash games it can become a different kettle of fish completely.

The pros of live poker: You can pick up reads a lot more easy if you know what you are looking for, do some reading and as recommended by other cc'er get some live experience with friends.
The cons or live poker: Be prepared to do a lot of sitting, waiting and watching you will get less hands per hour.

Note: If you are a winning online poker player in the micros 25nl, you should have no problems playing 200nl/300nl in most casino rooms. Find the fish and stay away from the Regs.
