hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this problem?? every friday for the last 4 months we have a poker night there are usually 9 or 10 of us the structure is start with 2000 chips and rebuys for the first hour if below 2000 then an add on at the end of the hour blinds up every 15 mins.
i have been playing poker for about 5 years but only started to learn the game properly in the last 8 months which i am doing ok and i play quite solid poker, 2 of the other guys at the table are experienced players one even played in the wsop in vegas a couple of years back.
so here is the problem!!! the rest of the guys at the table are complete fish, even after 4 months of playing every friday night we are explaining the rules and winning hands order, you know whats coming now... yes these players are in the money every week and it doesnt matter what strategy we 3 poker players adopt these guys are hitting everything, they are calling any raise, and playing any 2 cards. i have played tight, loose, abc poker, nothing seems to work and now its annoying cos these guys really think they are good. i always try to keep it in mind that playing good poker will net the winnings in the long run but after 4 months it seems that its best to play bad poker. Is it cos there are so many fish at the table they are sharing the luck or is it something else if anyone can help it would be appreciated.
sorry for the long post lol

i think you said your anser, variance will prevail. Stick to ABC's and you will come up in the long run. 4 months of just fridays is 16 games, just give it some time.

Are they pulling your leg? Maybe they're better than they're letting on. I mean, if they are that terrible they're only running on luck and that will run dry...either that or you're still needing some work yourself.

Try to make them not want to play a hand with you. Raise a small amount then shove the flop a lot during the re-buy period. Then maybe you will start getting more folds.:smokin:

I know what you are saying, i have learned that playing with people like that it is best to start playing the player. Instead of betting your hand check it and raise their bet huge. Once they lose one or two this way they wont be so willing to call your bet. They may also be playing you instead of the cards. Something to think about.

Let me at 'em. Sounds like the cash game I used to play in before the real "poker players" started having a weekly game at the pool hall. We played dealer's choice, which was usually stud variations. These cats had never heard of hold'em or didn't have a clue how to play it if they had. Anyway, I used to kill them. I actually heard a story of them sitting at the bar up at the pool hall. Apparently they were complaining that they didn't like the way I and one other guy played. They were criticizing the way we just folded and folded until we got good cards. According to them it's not fair to only play good hands.

You just have to hang in there, and keep your game tight. Once you start hitting those quality hands on them, they'll become increasingly reluctant to play hands with you with their pb/gl style.

thanks for the advice, admittedly im trying to improve my game so still have a lot to learn, and trust me these guys are not hustling, they are playing virtually every hand and when they talk about the game after it is actually quite amusing, i will just keep playing tight wait for good spots and try to play the player as mentioned, its just frustrating that i have to wait another week to get at them lol
again thanks everyone

Okay, well if they're legitmately bad players, my advice is to keep them on a line like a real fish. Reel them out a little bit over time and keep them interested, and keep them coming back while slowly working your way back to profitability. See it as a long term investment, you're going to be losing a little now but it's going to pay off in the end.

Right now they're winning, they're having the time of their life and see no need to change their style. When things do turn around, they're going to keep playing a bad game and you're gonna come in there and go all-in and they'll take the bait and you'll have them hook, line and sinker.

Best part of all, they'll come back for more because they won't see it as a loss related to their lack of skill but just a bad beat because they think they're great players. Once you have them addicted to poker and their egos high about how good they are, they'll just keep coming back and paying you more and more and more.

they bet/call without knowing any odds.. they dont know any better to fold preflop or if they hit a pair on the flop it seems kinda the way my girlfriend plays poker..lol and she does rather well some times i just sit and wonder how she does it...

Just one other thing to keep in mind, the long run really is a long run when you're talking about live poker. Playing once a week for four months means you've played what, less than 20 tournaments? That's a very short period in poker terms, and it's very possible for a bad player to just run good and win over that period. Looked at the other way, 20-game losing streaks certainly aren't unheard of for even the best SNG regulars.
