What kinds of hands should I be trying to check raise on the flop?

big draws. You are still in the small bet stage of the hand and the only reason i can see to c/r on flop is to try to buy a free river(thus saving 1 small bet).

Howard Lederer advocates check raising if you hit any piece of the flop, including a draw to a gutshot or better. The rationale is that if you always check out of position you're not giving away any information, so your opponent is essentially always acting first. Also, if your opponent missed and is just cbetting, you will sometimes win the pot right there.

I'll admit I have a hard time consistently doing it, though, and I'm not sure it works as well at very low limits where pots are often multiway.

What are we trying to accomplish with a c/r? Are we trying to fold out better hands? Are we value betting? What's the flop texture, and how hard does it hit Villain's range? How often does Villain fold to cbets, donk bets, and c/r's? Is donking/cbetting a better play given all the factors? Are we trying to buy a free river as dwolfg says? etc.

Thanks for that tip from Howard Lederer, never really considered that. I know that Gus Hansen thinks that being first to act is the best position because it gives the power to be the first to bluff.

As for the original question, check raise monster hands against specific board textures when being tricky. Sets/in-side straights are very easily disguisable on board textures with A's and K's. You really have to be in the villains head at this point.

If your check-raising to bluff, like previously said, big draws. But also aware of the villain's cbeting % and hand ranges. Even if he does call your bluff, theres lots of outs.

You really need to know what your doing, and know what your opponents are thinking when your check raising.
