Am new at this and am trying to figure out the most efficient way of thinking when figuring odds and options while sitting at a live table. I understand concepts like the rule of 4 and 2, figuring 2% per out, etc.
My question is when sitting at the table, should I have learned odds as percentages, old school odds (4.8 : 1), or a combination of both?
"Whichever you're most comfortable with", is not the answer I'm looking for. I would like to know the reason why you recommend one way of thinking over another. I want to train myself be consistent in my thinking when analyzing whats happening at the table.

Thanks

Why don't you ask what 2+2 is and stipulate that 4 is not the answer you want?

It is indeed whatever you are most comfortable with and both camps can come up with biased opinions why you should lean one way or the other.

Why is that the answer? Because they both serve the same function. If you go with strictly percentages then you also need to know how that translates to your odds of winning, but it is not necessary to compute that on the spot. In other words 33% is 2-1, 2-1 is 33% - it's the same thing, as long as you know it's the same thing. Now I am a math moron so I actually have to compute in my head 33% is 2-1 because I am more comfortable with odds coming from a race track background.

If I had a math genie wish I would rather be able to work strictly percentages and know what they mean without translating to the odds language that I am more familiar with. Being familiar with starting hand chart percentages I start off with % then fund myself swapping for calculating pot odds on draws and such. Generally percentages are more accurate - but only by a couple percent - lol.

It's also easier for me for some reason (brain wiring) to turn percent into odds, but odds into percent is for some reason a harder and longer process - but like I said, when it comes to anything past long division I am a short busser. In fact I am pretty sure someone will come in here and explain just how wrong I am.

Then of course once you get this figured out it's on to learning combinatorics.

You want to speak Spanish or English? Well it's always better if you can speak both.
