Hi,

I'm underage, I will turn 18 in 3 months, how can I learn playing poker without playing it at all? I mean, I know basics and some more advanced things (odds, outs, hand selection), what should I do if I want to become better at poker before turning 18?

Look for local games is what I did when I was underage. Get your friends interested in poker. Read lots of books.

Studying the game is extremely important, sounds like you've already got a start on that! There are tons of resources on CardsChat. I recommend studying the Poker Strategy pages as well as reading and responding to the forums on a regular basis.

Play the game (gaining experience) is equally as important as studying. There are plenty of softwares that you can use to practice "on the digital table." I recommend searching for an App and firing it up for some experience playing. Examples of Apps are Advanced Poker Training, Zynga, wsop, FB etc. In most of these apps you'll have an opportunity to play against other humans - you might think that the play is very reckless, but rest assured, it will prepare you for the freerolls that you will likely play online upon turning 18!

If you want to spend some cash on an app check out Poker Snowie which will accelerate your understanding of GTO play.

Good luck!

Read books, watch poker, plenty of free videos out there. I like Harrington's books. You can probably find some Texas holdem apps out there with play money. There are plenty of lessons that can be learned without playing for money. Texas holdem is a game of skill, and money or no money, no one likes to lose. I will leave you with a piece of advice that my dad gave me. If you can't afford to lose it, don't bet.

Why would you want to? If you win anything, you will never be able to withdraw the money without verification. If you sign up without verification and then wait until you are of legal age, your account may be seized because you will be shown to be underage at the time the account was made. You will be destroying your relationship with the site because you couldn't wait three months to get in on the action. This is not a "plan" with foresight.

I would not recommend playing in any freerolls until you are of age. You are close so no reason you can't hold out a bit longer.

I would read Harrington on Holdem. The full 3 volume series. The workbook will especially give you a good understanding of how to evaluate hands.

Otherwise you can prolly find a cheap introductory rate on Advanced Poker Training website. You can play and get some good feedback on the hands you need to work on. Once the introductory period is over you can cancel and start playing real games with an edge the rest of us wish we had. I don't believe they have an age limit on that site but due to some tournaments they run for members, I may be wrong,

Find some way to play, waiting 3 months till you turn 18 would be insane. Lie, cheat, do whatever you have to do, waiting would indicate patience & common sense, neither of which have any place in poker. Hurry.

Put in a fake birthday. Don't tell me you didn't think of this. If not maybe you should think about another hobby, like coloring, or playing with stuffed animals.

I recall reading that Phil Ivey said he used to sneak into the casinos at age 14 in Atlantic City heh

No wonder he's so good.

He learned so early and played with the pros ?

Plenty of ways to play for fun and keep it legal though.

Why don't you just do play chips on poker stars? It is not all that different from playing freerolls in real money poker rooms, as far as the play goes.

My only advice, since people have already given the advice, is to play a lot of play chip poker and keep trying to learn and improve while you are waiting to turn 21.
