NL holdem is certainly the most widely played game. Its what everyone watches on tv (highly edited) and the game people are most familiar with.

Interestingly, it is the worst played game by most new players. There are many facets that take lots of work, hands, and experience. You can't just read a book, watch ESPN, and head down to your local casino. Still, new players attempt to drive a formula 1 race car without even getting a drivers license.

My suggestion to new or novice players would be to consider learning how to play limit poker. While not as sexy as NL, to win at limit you have to be a solid, well rounded player. I would also throw PL Omaha in there also.

These games involve less "luck" (because you can't just shove all in with Jkos and hope to get lucky), develop your hand selection, post flop decisions, and ability to fold.

If you find yourself winning a few "all in" hands early in a tournament but getting stuck in the middle (when the play gets stronger) try to get a more rounded game.

I have never met a successful limit or Omaha player that didn't do well in NL. You will struggle in these games if you have holes in your game.
