In order to build some Poker experience I started off playing with dummy money but found the tables not realistic enough - not the same as a real game.
So I've played a couple of tournaments and although not doing as well as I want, I have improved a little.

What I am wondering is should tournaments be played slow and easy with the objective of staying in longer (witness the players who sit out) or is it better to play and therefore learn?

I just got knocked out of a tournament where I was doing ok with approx 2200 chips. A new player joined the table with 15000 and goes all in pre-flop. I have 2 Aces so I go all in along with another player.
I lose on the last card that gives the 3rd player a straight, otherwise I win.

Was I naive going all in - or just unlucky

You should be happy to get it in preflop with AA.....not sure what you are actually asking..

Poker is gambling, not simply a strategy game. You WILL LOSE MOST EVERY TOURNAMENT YOU PLAY IN AND MOST OF THE TIME WILL NOT CASH.

You need to come to terms with the idea that you will walk away from tournaments a loser the vast majority of the time even if you play very well.

Thanks.
I know that I won't win ... well not at this stage anyway :)
I was just wondering is it best to be cagey (and boring) by bottling out of the AA preflop and stay in tournaments as long as possible -- but I think I know the answer now, no point in sitting back if I want to learn.

There is value in sticking around, as Jonathan Little might say, but not much value in playing passively. Read and study to learn, but play to win.

There's nothing wrong with playing tight, especially as a relative newbie. However, improving your game isn't about lasting longer. It's about learning more and applying your knowledge better at the tables. Staying in longer gives you more time to observe, think and learn. But the additional time is only helpful in improving if you use it to do these things.

You can't learn poker in few days or weeks. You need play regular and learn from your mistakes. I think play chips isn't the best way to start, in my opinion it's better to play some freeroll tournaments. There level is a bit higher than in tournaments with play chips.

Never seen the point of entering a tourney then sitting out, you never know what hands are comming your way. It is just as easy to sit in and fold if you are mot happy with the cards you are dealt.
Calling an all in with AA is a simple choice, but the more that call, the less chance you have of winning.
You were just unlucky on the river with only 3 in that hand.
Keep on playing. Experience helps to make you a better player.

He is now playing in Freeroll tournaments, it's not a bad way to feel confidence in the game and you can win tournament tickets with cash flow.

call all-in with pocket aces is OK to do You will win 4 out of 5 against one opponant.

Two opponants its a little less.

And with 4 opponants it is 50/50

when it comes to playmoney I agree it is not realistic.

I only use it for HU practice.

But freerolls are more like real play and you can try different stuff without risking money.
