Sometimes it just irks me when people overplay hole cards like AK, AQ, AJ, etc.

Quite often I see people screw themselves with these hands and then rage about it when they lose, so I just want to remind anyone who gives a damn that aces and faces are only good preflop. Even A-A and K-K are solid hole cards, but its still just a pair so learn to let it go when you know your beat. Don't marry your hand, but instead learn to play it right.

Dont shove an average stack UTG with AK, your probably gonna win nothing or lose everything in most cases. At best your gonna be flipping a coin. Instead these hands should raised pre and played for value post flop. Dont risk your cash and tourneys by shoving these hands out of position, its just not worth it unless your playing complete donks who will call you with just about anything.

In short: dont gamble with AK and AQ, but instead play for value, theres always a sucker but dont let it be you.

Why didnt you post this befor weekend??!?!?
:D
It is all true and im the example how you can screw good spot at tourney with aq+ shove utg and not just shove i also call shoves late in turney with good stack ans want to get lucky. Ant when i lost and finish out of the money all i can say to myself is i knew that i shouldnt do that. But the beauty of poker is that not everything is that simple, there will be times that you will be cards dead the whole tourney and just sick of folding and folding and you see ATs and it looks like pocket aces and you think this is it i wont get better than this lets ship it at least ill steal blinds and antes i have been really quiet for a long time they will think i have monster but too bad you got called and you are out, i cant count times that this happened to me... Of coure that these are good starting hands but this is it starting hand, it should be played according to the table dynamic and opponents and comunity cards post flop

Im not saying that one should never shove these hands. Im saying they should be shoved in the right spots.
I want people to understand that it is stupid to play these hands by shoving anytime, anywhere as if they were guaranteed nuts.

well depends what are you playing

AK is one of the favourites hands, i agree you don´t have to push mp. but it´s not always correct, because there are multiple situations where you can shove AK,

For example if your stack is less than 10 bb, you should put all your chips in the center

another situation if you are in a table very quite (maybe because is a mtt and approaching to the itm) then you can shove with AK to try to steal blinds if your stack is enough high in comparison with most of the players reminding

another situation could be in late position when three or four call, and then you can shove AK,

so it depends what are you playing, where, when, and against who, every hand is independent of the others, so play stick to info you are getting and then take the decision you think has the best +EV

Those are all drawing hands an only AK is considered a monster. In most case I will call or make a small raise to see where I am prefolp. Shoving or three betting these hands can be disastrous..

When is a good spot to shove AK AQ etc?

I would say factors to use as a guild would be
in late position
do you have other players covered
some has been abusing and pushing or big raising pre no1 can have aa 4 hands ina row lol
you found a player raising with a range that would require a wide angle lens to see it all

I am sure there are other proper times to push with ak aq
but I think the original post was about how over done that move is in todays game.

Are you trying to say ak suited is not the nuts online? See sarcasm LOL Obviously some will shove with this and fold jj, or qq. Thanks for the info and reminder. I have found shoving with ak early or calling ai w ak early in a tourney can be hazardous to your bank roll.

I just read a closed thread " Do you ever fold AK pre flop?". I highly recommend it. Many valuable comments that apply to this discussion can be found in that thread. Enjoy!

You are absolutely right mister blikbleek, you wrote down very good post, there are something more that I can only add to what you said and that is an advice for all the players at the tables DO AVOID much of the coin flips, they are not profitable and it is high risk situations we all should avoid.:)
