Been trying my hand in a few cheapass tournaments over the last couple of days in order to try and sharpen myself up.

In one of them, some guy seemed to take a dislike to me or my play and started calling me things in the chatbox: fish, n00b, loser, bag of nails (?? -- can't find a reference for this one).

This rattled me and I think I misplayed a couple of hands as a consequence. (Still finished in the money though! First time...)

What techniques do people have for letting idiots like this wash off their backs like Sam Goldwyn's proverbial duck, and not letting it get to them?

Turn off chat if it bothers or distracts you. Problem solved.

Can't turn off chat without also turning off the notes facility :( And I'm trying to make sure I use that from the getgo.

(also, would miss out on any useful/interesting comments from normal people)

This.

Can't turn off chat without also turning off the notes facility :( And I'm trying to make sure I use that from the getgo.

I don't know if it is the same where you play. At Bovada, you can switch the chat so it is displaying the notes instead. Then you can't see what people are saying. I do this frequently, because people talk trash so much.

You'll encounter plenty of insults the more you play, and after a while you'll likely grow desensitized to them. Keep in mind that it's rarely good players who resort to tilt-chatting. Shrug it off, and don't let it interfere with your game play.

I only take note of them in the sense that I do think it represents another potentially exploitable piece of information about my opponent. If I notice someone tilt-prone and sense that it makes them more likely to loosen up, I may adjust my play accordingly--but it wouldn't be because I feel bad about their comments.

Well whaddya know. You can turn off chat and just keep the notes, I just hadn't figured out how to. Now I really feel like a clueless noob.

I'm still trying to figure out what gave me away as a neophyte though. Since it obviously wasn't that ;)

Turning it off is for sure your best option. There's really no point in keeping it on.
I like to keep chat turned on for priv. forum games but even in those there's the occassional player who's on perma-mute. Much better this way.

I don't know how to turn it off on bodog. Seems with the added anonymity on there, some players are even bigger jerkoffs than on other sites. Tonight though, I picked up some info. from not being able to turn it off (player laughing at me when I made super standard call)... let me know that 'yes'.. they were just as bad as I'd assumed (maybe even worse).

Good luck Grebbsy!!!

Even if you can't turn off chat, who says you have to read it? IMO, you're much better served to use that attention to observe your opponents so as to improve your awareness of their styles, tendencies and ranges

Mmmmyes, though surely chat can serve as part of that observation too?

Sometimes you can use their attitude against them in the game! Either ignore, or try to rattle their play!
I often become very condescending to this kind of "chat". I try to "push their buttons" so they make a mistake!

I just ignore anyone who is rude and childish. I like to keep the chat on encase anyone asks me a question after a hand or anything.

Most people say and do things to get a reaction. If they don't get a reaction they usually shut up. For an example, back in my long hair days (70's & 80's) it was quite common to hear the phrase, "is that a man or a woman" I'd just turn and smile. Not the reaction they were looking for, you could almost see the steam coming out of their ears as they went on tilt. So no reaction is the best action.
Just my thoughts.

Turn off chat...
If you cant turn off chat put a post-a-note on top of the chat screen.. myself I never look at the chat. when I do and you see a person like that I automatically think "fish".. in poker if you cant control your emotions you are going to dump your chips..

Just remember that the reason they are cussing at you is probably because you outplayed them and stacked their chips. Take some pride in the fact that you got the best of them and wash them off and chuckle at their ignorance

I laugh when someone tries to insult me. One time this guy told me: "I hope your wife gets raped and dies." I say'd that I don't have a wife, so he answered that he hopes that I die in a car crash. Then I say'd that I don't have a car either. It's funny seeing someone blow up after you've spent the last few hours or so just sitting and clicking.
Learn to enjoy these assholes :D, they're there to entertain you!
The fact that that it bothers you only shows that you give a f*** what he says.

+ It's a sign that the guy is on tilt = $$$.

Perhaps not as productive or indeed right as everyone saying to turn chat off, but I was playing once with a fish who keep spewing money to everyone and berating everybody on chat.

No-one paid any attention apart from one guys who just responded with "Your Mum" every time an insult came his way.

Completely childish of course, but brought a smile to my face and made the fish even madder!

First of all, congrats on finishing ITM!

I do keep chat on (it entertains me). Sometimes I've found good players who I refer to this forum.

The cursing is usually after I've taken their chips. Usually I ignore them and note that they are tilted (which can be great for us). Sometimes I say "thank you" and that really bugs them.

Mostly I don't get tilted; I just feel bad for them (serious anger issues when you're fuming over a low-stakes game/buyin). I'm proud of being a respectful player and you can't get tilted by someone that you feel sorry for.

You don't need to turn chat off. Just right click on the person, and block chat for that individual.

When I first started the chat really bothered me. My nick was obviously a female name, so I'd get comments like they hoped I would get r@ped with a knife and such stuff. It was ridiculous, but it really bothered me. I blocked chat for awhile until I grew a bit of a thicker skin. I also registered with some gender-neutral names on different sites until my game improved.

Nowadays I use the content of the chat against them. It's a psychology game.

On most sites there is a way to block just that player, or to block chat overall. Do whatever makes you more comfortable. I find that the verbal rudeness I experience online is not duplicated in a live casino, so I just treat it as an anomaly of the online game.

By the way ... bag of nails. I'm familiar with a phrase "dumb as a bag of hammers" used in the maritimes of canada in the 1990s.
