Just made my first proper deposit

Just deposited $300 on fulltilt, and am making it my first real attempt at making money, and building a bankroll.

I consider myself competent, but know that the more time i put in, the better i will get.

What limits should i play, and what tourney buy-ins should i limit myself at?

And finally, any advice for someone just starting to take poker seriously?

Look around, there are several threads on brm (bankroll management) here. You can play 10nl cash games ($0.05/$0.10) on a $300 roll - that doesn't mean you have to start there. I'm not sure about tourney brm, but there are a lot of posts here discussing it.

Advice - study, talk, post hands, read, read, read... oh, and have fun and win lots of money!!!

Start at a level that you have proven you can win at.If you are new to online poker,you should start at much smaller stakes than you may have won in live play.

Playing tourneys,I think I would limit myself to $5 and under to get an Idea of your win rate or loss rate.

Personally I would play $2 or $5 double or nothing sng's for three reasons, to get used to final table play and bubble play at the same time which will stand you in good stead if you progress to mtt's, and to limit losses and build up your bankroll.

i go by some simple rules which should be easy to figure out with a calculator. Ring game buy in can be no more than 5% of ur BR. SNGs are also 5% and MTTs are 2%

Why would you deposit $300??,unless you are trying for the first time deposit bonus.So,I would Not play micro-stakes.I assume you are reasonably good to deposit this much.I really like badbeat tables and been doing fairly good at them.There is not much donkness there either.I dont think Fulltilt has badbeat tables,but I assume they are tight around the 50c-$1 level in ring games.
Unless you play better in tourneys,then Id pick out a decent sit n go game.Pick ones that have decent rake points,depending on your skill level.Plus watchout for fulltilts awful bad-beats,they can be brutal.Good Luck!

Is FT notorious for "bad beats"?

The biggest mistake people make online is playing beyond their bankroll limits. Pay close attention to br management. Play at the micro stakes ring buy ins until you hone your skills and get used to the concepts. Play at the low buy in sng's/mtt's to start and post hands in the hand history section on here to get advice. Read strategy guides and have some patience.

All sites have bad beats, more of them in the lower stakes and if you get your money in good, you'll just see more of them than bad players. These are facts of poker, be it live or online. GL!

unless you use bad BR management, you just threw your money away. I would guess anything under the $50 dollar buy ins are nothing but a f-cking waste of time and money.

What exactly do you mean by this?

If he's a solid player, a 300$ BR is great to start with. Stick to the 5%/5%/2% strategy listed above and you can't go wrong in the long haul.

Funny for a guy that plays "micro" to give such horrible advice!

i'd suggest a 2% limit per buyin across the board or even less until your sure your winning. also tell me you signed up for rakeback. another word of advice is to concentrate on playing good poker and view the sign on bonus as just that a bonus. i dropped around $400 unlocking my last $20 of bonus. then dropped another $70 trying to earn a $50 ironman bonus that still had to be unlocked.

well, the deposit was money i won playing live. And i agree, the bonus is just a bonus. I have to say, i have read some interesting things here already.
