You can't 3bet with no raises.

J9s is super marginal. J9o is junk in anything but the button.

You can also try to steal pots with J9off or suited if you're in good position. Sometimes(and i mean SOMETIMES ONLY) you can call a raise if you're trying to defend your blind or if you want to 3 bet their raise.

There are about 33 questions/thoughts that need to be included with this post in order for any sort of meaningful response.

SH/FT/HU?

Blinds defend?

Active guy behind yet to act...?

Your image?

Gameflow?

People too often are looking for a cookie cutter approach to poker.

That being said, on the button in a donkament given normal opponents and conditions/gameflow....I would be raising j9 about 99% of the time.

J9 is an avg or slightly below avg strength holding. So basically, you're no better than 50-50 vs one opponent whose range is any two cards. It's certainly playable in some situations, basically the ones where card strength is decreased in importance; e.g. stealing from the button.

J9s is pretty sexy though.

also, if you're not opening J9o from the CO you're probably playing pretty nitty

It's a crappy hand.

Late position ideal for one gappers like this.

Like someone else said, there is no cookie cutter approach to poker. There are many dynamics to consider.

I don't think anyone could ever accuse me of being nitty. :p Honestly I think it's perfectly fair to accuse me of being a donk, in fact. I'm WORKING on nitting myself up, but my last foray into 2NL I lost my (shallow, in all fairness) roll because I would bet out the flop with literally 1/3 of all hands I was dealt ever.

Very bottom of my range for sure. Maybe on button or cutoff playing DEEP and no one has opened.

it just depends on who you play it. Your jack is rarely going to be good for top pair. If there's a lot of pressure if you flop a 9, it's almost always know good. you're really looking for a straight with this hand. Ideally you want the 8TQ on the board so you can stack off AQ KQ, etc. in late position, if it's suited, sure give it a shot. Like they said before, there is a lot of other factors that need to be taken into account. Your biggest problem is are you ever going to call a 3bet with it?. Another way to win with it is to flop 2 pair even better yet flop the boat and stack off AJ
You can play almost anything you want preflop but I wouldn't begin with thinking J9 is a good hand.

J9 is my favourite hand of all time and if anyone badmouths it I will find you and stack you with it. I will then screenshot that **** and make it my wallpaper for a solid half hour or longer, and probably email the image to the site's support staff while I'm at it for no reason whatsoever.

I'd say let's play HU, but J9o is a legit value hand HU.

What. I'm like the end boss. You can't just play me hu unless you input stage select codes or something.

If you're not still busto and your hu stats still look more like 6max stats then I'll tell you what... I'll take a sec and code up a bot from scratch that you can play while I look at cat memes and post on video game message boards. It'll almost be like playing me since I wrote the script, right. I'll call him Merv and I'll try to make sure he's not too tough or anything.

I hope I am holding AA when you 3 bet your J9 :D
He will fold to your AA.I read something about this in a book.It said 3bet with something like j9 is better than with JJ or 1010.You have no regret when you met reraised.

I wouldn't really 3bet with J9 in most situations; it's clearly not a value 3bet hand and you don't block shit when you 3bet. I might turn J9s into a 3bet bluff if I don't have the odds to flat and speculate, but J9o? Nah.

J9s is a good hand to limp in to try to see a flop, however facing a raise you shouldn't even consider. J9o is just a trash hand.

J9s is good, but J9o not so good. Wth J9s you can defend BB, but raise pre flop is a little weak for me. Eventually you can try to steal from button. Pokerstove shows that J9s is top 17,6% hands, for me it is marginal hand. Sometimes somebody play with that hand vs me, when I lose then I'm a little suprised.

J9 is a good hand to 3 bet light, you do block JJ but more importantly you can flop something good and concealed still.

J9s being much better hand.

No money to play higher. I'm a broke student, no job, and I'm surrounded by control freaks that don't even want me to play poker.

Actually atm I have no money to play anything at all. I'm freerolling my way back up to 5NL when I can (should take a while :(), and I play a ton of heads-up play money with HU reg friends (one from NL50 who's currently not playing for real money since Lock collapsed, another one from like NL1000) to keep my game sharp -- nowadays that accounts for nearly all my volume.
