In which game is math useful? (cash or tourney)

Hey! :)

I'm a physics student and I see poker in a more mathematical way than the average. I guess it is only about 50% math and 50% anything else. I mean I see it in a way that usually you have to estimate first the opponent ranges (which is usually not math) and then calculate some probability etc.

But what do you think which game type (cash game or tournament) fits the most for a less intuitive and more scientific playstyle?

I read that in cash games the only downswing come from long run good decisions which was unlucky at the moment (assuming that you are a decent player).

Why doesn't fit this on tournaments? You make a good decision going all in with strong cards against a loose opponent but he gets lucky and wins 70-30 for instance and you are out. But if you play a lot of tournament and do the same good decisions, will you get the same results from that as the cash games?

Somebody said you can play tournaments intuitively with profit but you can't play cash games with the same results.

It is my personal take/opinion,

If you have a game that consists of a [fixed number of cards]and an [X] amount of out-comes, then the [probability aspect] of Math can never be marginalizedno matter whether it is a cash game or a tournament.

Phil Ivey said the best players are socially intelligent. The answer would be cash game where the needed quantity per hands is 120K which evens out the luck and shows if you are a competent skilled player. In MTTs one wrong draw even if you are favorite kills you.

I think cash games you really need the math simply because blind are fixed and instead of a chip stack you are using your own bankroll which requires a huge amount of observation and calculation of out and odds.

in the cash game, the math is more visible, if you use more believe, because there is no bubble, no ANTE, no ICM value, tournaments is much more strategy along with math, she is also in tournaments, more often you you need to use other factors to get you to the final table.

I include "math" in things like icm, so to me the math becomes easier the shallower the stacks are. Mtts tend to play with shallower effective stacks than a deep stack cash game. But with the advent of software like Piosolver you can pretty much game theory optimally solve just about any poker situation.

In cash of course. Because in tourney the main role is played chance.

  • I believe that math is more useful in the cash game.

  • In the cash game, stacks are very deep.We usually use math to calculate the pot whether call or not.

I would say that cash games would find math more important. The blinds do not raise and you can always reload.

I'd say cash games it's more important because your variance is more likely to even out. With tournaments, if you hit a bad beat early on, it means you're at a disadvantage even you play optimally from there. So in MTTs there is a disproportionate advantage to aggression and non GTO plays based on player reading, especially, I believe, early on.
