Hi, I share an interest in the game as I watch poker on youtube and have played poker on both facebook and pokerstars with playmoney occasionally but have thought of improving since playmoney-players dont really play at their best given how playmoney is always disposable and 'fake'. The only thing stopping me from playing with real money online was that gambling is quite strongly discouraged in my family due to some bad history.

So I came across the promotion on pokerstars, whereby as long as you deposit $20 or more, you're rewarded $20 even before having a start at the game, just that this free sum is not withdrawable and can only be cashed out after you accumulate enough play points (or something like that)

More can be found out here:

Was wondering if I should have a go at it, since I could essentially withdraw my initial $20 and just start having fun with the free $20 real money and have a taste of how much more different the players would be playing and learn from there on..

Should I just have a shot? Or does what I'm saying actl doesnt make sense? >_<

Go for it. Once you start playing real money poker you finally start learning about the actual game. Most importantly understand that it isn't strictly gambling. If so how could you have consistent winners?

Stick around here, ask questions and learn. Then when you understand the game more, have played through variance and show profit over a large sample. Then, go to your family and let them know you are playing.

I'll say one final thing. Don't let bad history stop you doing what you enjoy. Someone else's weakness and failings are not your own, so don't let the past faze you.

There are lots of sites that will give you real money to start without making any deposit. Sites like 888 and Titan will give you start up cash... And by the way it is gambling.

My boring advice is that if your family is against gambling, this is not the route for you. Beating it can make your hair go white (real money online poker). Good luck. If you try it and do win, thats nice, if you lose, you were warned.

I'd say you might as well try it. Maybe you could put on some restrictions though as many sites allow you to. Just as a precaution from losing more than that $20.

i agree with poster that said it IS gambling..i just don't buy the "skill" aspect of it. The skill in live action is picking up tells when a guy is bluffing, or know who is a calling station and who will fold to a big bet..but online you can do everything right and still lose to the river.

Worst post I ever read. I wish I could erase it universally.

I would say play the real money freerolls. until you cash in sevral of these you are not ready to risk any of your money on poker.

Good idea by Trek. Sure people tend to play more reckless for the first hour or so but after that its pretty straightforward. It gives a great base for your core game. No reason to try to turn $40 into a million first. Also Im pretty sure most families don't approve of poker until you start winning. Then its all good. Good luck.

If poker is pure luck then how come the same people win on a consistent basis? Yes tells are huge live but they're are plenty of tells online as well. To the original poster imho the best way to play and enjoy poker is to observe bankroll management. Good luck.

Just play ABC poker online and you will win guaranteed. There will be bad beats, suckouts etc...just stick to ABC poker and at the end of the month you will be a head from where you started.

I aggree, the top players go deeper far more often than the the players who just play to get lucky.

there is skill and strategy involved

You can make your chances of success better (playing single table tourneys, 6 man cash games, heads up etc..) you can not always play big tourneys and expect to win big...I agree most of the players that cash play well and are pretty experienced however anyone can have a good success rate in shorter fields by playing ABC poker and with a lil luck.
