I have quite a few friends who play, feed up hearing about their big wins.

I wanna start too, I have a lot to learn but wanted to get your thoughts, is it better to start 'Online' or in a 'Casino'?

What do you do? Why?

Definitely is better to start online since they have freerolls that will allow you to practice and start using all the different strategies. another advantage is if you get into pokerstars Intellipoker, they have lots of resources and even a poker school, also online you may play 300 hands in a week that will be impossible in a Casino. Wish you luck. :)

Playing online provides soooo many more opportunities than playing live, with few downsides imo.

agreed, online is best. BUT please learn bankroll management before you do anything.
online is better, you can be more comfortable, play at lower stakes, and more often without giving away any physical tells that a lot of beginners do when they play live - very costly

Feeling it in my bones

Thanks for the input everyone, sounds like online is the best place to start and perfect.

Any suggestions or recommendations on where?

What should I watch out for, apart from sharks LOLZ:D

Eastern US player here:

I recently began playing the FRs on BetOnline and found them pretty enjoyable/sometimes beatable. The "nooner" games at 6am and 12pm are a bit tougher, but have the best ratio of ITM%/payouts/etc... The games from around 2am to 6am are pretty soft, with much smaller field sizes.

Online is great for beginners, opponents won't be available to your shaky hand, nervouse moving, smiles and mimics.. so yeah it is good for you to start behind the screen. Try to learn about poker, rules, you can choose a lot of games, i recommend you PLO, much more dynamical then NLH. And you PLO, you fill learn to think about the hand and game while you are playing. 1st try to play freerolls, see how it is going. If you want to play for the money, i recommend you to try Spin'n'go, only 3 players, and small tour but without rebuys, you can try 256players 1$ buy-in satellite for 10th anniversary sunday milion; idk check some online poker tests about poker rules and stuff.
I prefer PLO cash game.

I think it's better if you start online because there will be freerolls where you can play and also learn without spending any money. Also,by becoming an active member here at Cardschat and eventually getting in the Cardschat Freeroll Club you will be able to make a bankroll by playing many freerolls that Cardschat has to offer.

Online casino because you will probably lose more money and learn less

It is best to start with online poker. There are freerolls. You can build them their first bankroll. The casino does not.

It's better to play online than go directly to casino and i recommend you to watch some live tours and learn and don't go all in with 2&5 or i will kill you :D

Gotta be easier to play online purely because of the easy availability... I don't play live but I'd imagine you will run into stronger players from the get go...

learn your trade online first, as Milka says lots of Freerolls online... Be grateful you can learn a tough game for free starting out with Live play might be an expensive lesson...

Good Luck !

Poker and casino? They are two different things. Poker needs skills and is more strategic game.

Better to start online if you are an absolute beginner. It is easy to find games and your mistakes will be known only to you. Don't play as others players do, have your own standards of play and stick with them. Once you understand the game and are confident enough, move on to low level cash games.

Online for sure! It is far cheaper to learn AND you can actually be playing against fairly decent players even in the low/micro buyins. Its a great way to learn the fundamentals and to work at getting a solid foundation.

I'd also suggest reading a few basic books. Alot of players get going in poker and don't really learn the fundamentals... probably not a great idea.

If I were you I would pick up a copy of PHil Gordon's Little Green Book & then if planning on playing Tournament NLHE Poker, grab Harrington On Holdem Vol. 1 & 2 That'd give a good start.

Resources are already available on the online web, I do agree with them go watch some youtube videos about the casino game that you wanna be familiar about. BTW do you have any background on playing or you really are new on gambling?
