I'm new to these forums so I'll introduce myself, I'm 18 and I've been playing poker for 3 months, I mainly play STTs, Heads Up Sit N Gos and some cash games on Bovada as well as some MTTs and I'd like to believe I am intermediate level player. I know many basics things like outs, pot odds, expected value, the meaning of ICM, etc etc. I just feel like I'm missing something. I feel like my game isn't very strong and I feel like I have obvious leaks or I feel like I'm easily exploitable. I don't know what to do and it's kind of frustrating. Any tips or guidance? I think I just need people to talk poker with honestly hahaha.

The best thing to do is ask specific questions, post tough hands in hand analysis, and read, read, read through threads, and our strategy articles.

I am a losing player but have you tried pockertracker/hold em manager 2 ? I've found that pokerstracker 4 has a certain menu that looks over your games and tell you what part of them is sub-par (and they come in trial versions too )

Hey if you're a losing player then better to read articles and strategy first. You should also spend more time on the tables. Three months of poker is not enough I guess and once you've gotten the hang of it then you can move to more advanced stuff like HUD and tracking software.

One year ago I did not know anything about poker.

First I started playing like a wild animal and I were loosing loosing loosing.

Then I bacame member of pokerstars Pokerschool and I started to know much more about the game.

Then I joined Cardschat and in a very short time I started to improve my play.

When I play poker I mainly play freerolls, because they are for free and I can try out all sorts of thing for free.

But good thing is reading this forum ask questions and then play freerolls lots of freerolls.

When you are ready then you can deposit.

While I am not a huge proponent of books these days since many are outdated and the game is just moving ahead too fast to make MOST books that relevant....

I would read Colin Moshman's SNG book if I were you. It isn't ONLY about SNG's, but since STT are pretty formulaic/relatively simple to solve, a text like his will help you avoig major mistakes/misconceptions.

GL, remember, you just started, and with the headstart millions of people have on you in poker, it might not be that realistic to think you'll be profitable in the 1st 6months/yr.

thanks everybody for the replies, I've been watching and reading a lot of stuff and I'm working hard to implement it into my game. Would anybody be interested in playing me heads up at poker stars or full tilt using play money and help figure out my leaks?

Maybe you can post some hands you have played that are really confusing you so we can discuss how to find and solve your leaks.

I think if you want to improve, it takes time and its a learning process and not taken overnight.

You have to lose just to learn but you can minimize it by joining freerolls/very low stakes only (at first).

are you feeling lost because you're not making money or just breaking even? if you find yourself losing money, then i think it's a matter of analyzing your play whether it's bluffing too much, calling when you shouldn't, not folding when you should, being to loose/passive instead of tight/aggressive, etc. you can certainly read books and articles, but i think it's a matter of taking a step back and evaluating your play and decisions.

Just study, watch training videos, post hands for analysis and ask lots of questions. Be open minded and eager to learn and you will improve for sure. Good luck bro.

+1. I think I have been playing for close to 6-7 so years, and I am only just now considering myself Intermediate player, maybe advance but doubt it. There is so much to poker and the more you learn the more complex it gets. Most people just look at it and think its easy, oh I just gotta have 2 cards better then the other guy. Sounds easy when you hear that way. Sadly, we all know..there is a lot more to it then just the cards youre holding. My suggestion, be open minded. Always try to find your leaks and plug them, and take constructive criticism well, don't ever let pride/ego effect your poker.

HU is such a different game that this invitation might be way premature.

You will find a lot of folks who will nay say play money poker. I recommend it. Set yourself a goal of 1 million Play Chips. Getting anywhere near that goal will show you so much about your approach, and teach you so many things about the game, that those "don't bother with Play Money gaming" folks argument falls flat. I maintain that the ONLY thing play money poker can not teach you is how to play with scared money. And no one should be playing with scared money every. BTW, this real/play money discussion has never been solved in my 8 years here at CC.

If you are filthy rich, and can afford to throw a buy-in of real money down the drain every session for a year, then by all means, go ahead and do it. You will become a favorite amongst regular players and you will improve simply by osmosis.

At the highest levels of play money poker, you will find decent enough poker for FREE, with ample entertainment value, and with study you will improve or find this really isn't your game.

Freerolls > Play Money. In my eyes atleast. I think he would get better exp. from freerolls. Cause will still have the idiots at start and throughout whole thing. Then if you run deep play starts tightening up and getting a little better. But essentially is usually a lot of rampant donks. Then obviously you got chance of making money

Sorry I didn't mean to insult anyone by considering myself intermediate. I really am not as good as I thought I was. I grinded my way up to $50 from $15 first deposit in about 6 days playing $1.10 buy in SNGs so that's why I kind of felt that way. I know it isn't much but for me that felt like a great start. I'm just going to keep playing STTs and Freerolls. My goal is to be able to become a winning MTT player as I have played several and never cashed yet. I appreciate all the replies and this thread definitely gave me a reality check with my ego and everything. :)

As I consider myself a strong MTT player. My suggestion to you..PATIENCE AND DISCLIPINE. both are needed in MTTs. Also, don't go into it thinking you gotta win every MTT. MTT have a high downswing rate. But it is worth it, cause as long as your cashing decent amount of time, running deep, and binking them for 1st. That should make up for it. Look forward to seeing your MTT adventures.

It's great to play freerolls. It usually sucks at the start because of all the guys shoving, but if you manage to get deep, it's usually a challenge, specially if it's a freeroll with a good prize pool.

Start posting preflop hands which are troublesome for you.
Eventually you'll have more questions about how to play a hand postflop.
Post whatever hands you feel doubtful about and wonderful people here will help out giving their views and how they would have handled the situation you've posted.
Good luck.

Agree. Freerolls can help you to grow fast and you can build up enough bankroll to upgrade your level.
