are slightly better with TT or higher because you're taking some of their straight outs and it's less likely that the board will pair twice giving the other player two pair with a higher kicker. It's only a couple of percent difference though - you have to look at AKs vs 22 before the odds become even. In any other case the pair is in the lead.
Don't take anything you hear at the table too seriously - I heard the same "he got lucky" speech once from a guy who called a 5000 allin with Q8 suited because he already had 800 in for the big blind. The allin guy showed his AA and mr Q8 started ranting about how lucky the guy was for hitting pocket aces at just the right time.
