*Note, this is a long post*

Hey guys, I just signed up recently but haven't posted a whole lot because I have been working 50 percent of the time and playing poker the other 50 percent. I had 20 dollars that was absolute spending money I put in an online room awhile back, just for shits and giggles (never played texas hold em, or poker for money at any point in my life). I totally fell in love with the game, even though I quickly lost that 20 dollars.

I am as SERIOUS as anyone ever was about learning to play better poker, and I am doing well but I would like any advice possible from someone who has struggled with it when they were beginning. I play mostly freerolls now, or low low buy-in SNG's. I tested my feet in a few low blind (NL) games, still not quite confident enough to make a switch to cash games. There are a few questions I have I can not quite figure out, please if you are going to answer do so from experience.

Freerolls - I know the beginning freerolls are full of donks and never go all in on the first couple hands, the good stuff usually starts after the first break. However, is it EVER a good idea to go all in before the first break or later? I went all in with A A after being tight for an hour, I seen the flop a few times before this hand but nothing worth stickin in there for. So I go all in pre-flop and a donk then comes all in with a 2/3 unsuited and WINS on the turn and the river. Is folding aces a good idea when you know there are donks around ready to go all in on anything or is this kind of thing just a bad beat that will occassionally happen regardless?

SNG's, Freerolls, and Cash Tables - Where am I going to get the best experience with a small bank roll? I can decimate most people at beginners level but I am not sure where I am going to get the most valuable experience for my play time. I am not ready to invest any significant amount of money yet, but if I want the experience do I really have to play cash ring games?

This is my main concern, I am willing to put in all the time and effort in the world. I just want to know how that time and effort will be best spent, and any advice at all will be greatly appreciated :)

You certainly don't have to play cash games. There are lots of poker players who have made a career from MTT's, or SNG's, even specifically HU SNG's.

You just need to be aware that the strategies for each of these games is unique to itself, and therefore I would suggest you invest the time to learn whichever game is the most enjoyable for you.

Most people will never make poker a career, but many can enjoy the game, and even make a little money at it.

With that said, I feel that micro stakes cash tables are probably one of the lower variance forms of the game. MTT players can go long periods without cashing from what I understand, and for me anyway, SNG's are just not worth the time/heartache. These things can easily drive you insane, and if you get any good at playing cash, then the $/hour you make is just sick compared to being a nasty SNG player.

BeastieMik talked about this from experience, he was a very successful hi stakes SNG player, now he plays strictly cash and says he wishes he hadn't spent that earlier time playing SNG's.

If you're decimating people at any level, I'd suggest continuing to do that, and soon enough your bankroll will be much larger.

Garbage hands sometimes win. There's nothing you can do to change that. Poker is about getting your chips or money in the pot in situations where you have +EV. If you do that consistently, you'll win overall.

At low levels, whether MTTs, SNGs or ring games, solid poker is winning poker. So if you learn that, it serves as a base to build on as you adapt your game to incorporate more advanced and subtle concepts.

Some poker forums have Bad Beats sections if you want to let your energy and gripe out. As Arjonius has said get your money in when you are ahead in the odds and just let it play from there. Unfortunately you or I or anyone else cant win every hand.

My best advice.... Read some poker books!! (there are some excellent ones out there!).
Start off with Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book".
Then read Harrington On Holdem - Tournament Play Vol.1 & 2

If you want to specialize in SNG's...read Collin Moshmann's SNG Strategy (but read the other books listed above first).

You can't go wrong with these 4 books & I'd guarantee you'll be way ahead of the avg. micro player if you go through them thoroughly.
