Im not sure what the lowest limits are but say for example the small money tables at Atlantic City? Are these players who play for fun or students that have read a few poker books or a combination of both?

^^^ +1

When you first sit at the table, pay attention to anyone who's unusually better than the others, there may be some thinking players, not everyone will be clueless (maybe). Plan on attacking everyone else.

"Donking" as in "donk betting" or as in "being a donkey"?

Donkeys/fish exist at all limits, they just don't last very long at higher limits. I dunno, $5/$10 is probably less filled with donkeys.

Keep in mind, though, that donkeys are profitable if you know what you're doing. Getting sucked out on can be frustrating, but over the long run the reason they're sucking out on you is the same reason you can make money from them - and that reason is that they put money in the pot when they should not.

It depends on the casino, most people playing at stakes like 5/10 NL really aren't that experienced. As long as you keep aggressive and bet strong you are gonna get paid off good.

I don't know about you all's experience, but I find the talent better at the .01-.02 than the .02-.05 @ FT.

Go figure.

If you are the new person in town you need to be very alert for the locals that have played against and with each other for months. They are there to take your money not each others, be very aware of the conversation .

*walks in late*

I've only got experience in Australia, but from everything I've read the games here play much like they do everywhere else.

Expect play at the lower levels ($1-2 to $2-5 blinds) to be awful. They can be hilariously profitable, though the variance will be high because everyone will want to play every hand for big amounts.

Yep. That's one of the things a person hasta get used to.

I play a lot on the $20.00 tables at Hawaiian Gardens. The only casino around here with them. I play because the money is pretty steady. I can literally stop in there for lunch. Sit down with 20, and walk away with a free lunch and a hundred dollar bill.

What I had to get used to at first was getting over the bad beats. I mean, they make some stupidly, stupid plays. Which seem work out for them, sometimes. Then the steam comes. They just took a big chunk, off a rivered set fives. Or the ever present flush draw.

Then it hit me. I mean, I always knew it. But it really hit me. I WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

Gotta take the good (plenty) with the bad. (few) :)

There are donks at any level--that said, 15/30 and up there are usually fewer. That said, why would you want to play without the -EV (expected value) players? Those guys are the reason we invented the game.

Not here in new zealand - .05/.10 the players are very tight by comparison. $1/$2 there are many people playing most every hand and calling with weak pairs or draws. Very loose play. I don't do a lot of bluffing unless I know I'm up against someone who will fold - mostly I just wait for big hands and bet the heck out of them.

There are a few very good players, a few who really study the game, but most are either gamblers or there for fun. The gamblers are the ones who bring their cups of slot machine coins or blackjack chips to the table.
