I've just watched a couple of videos on youtube of Daniel Negreanu reading players hands. I know that he doesn't do it 100% of the time but how the hell does he sometimes manage to read the exact cards his opponent has?

How do you read cards in online games? is it possible? and how do you put opponents on different hand ranges?

It's largely a matter of narrowing down a person's range based on how he has played previous hands. As a simple example, if a very nitty player opens from EP, his range is quite narrow to begin with. Then, if you've seen that he's a fit or fold type whom you've never seen c-bet with less than top pair, you can further narrow his range depending on whether he c-bets or not. Or maybe you've seen that he usually c-bets, but smaller with draws than with made hands. Again, the action he takes helps define his range. As the hand continues, you can continue to narrow his range. You won't get down to knowing his exact holding very often. But presumably you've seen Negreanu do this on TV, where the times he guesses wrong tend to be edited out.

There have been a lot of bad folds by Negreanu on HSP, lots of bad calls too.

I personally find it very difficult, because in SNG or MTT you very often dont have long enough to read opponents..

Also, there are some really erratic random nutjobs out there, which makes it difficult.

I think like you. The type of games we play out there do not take us long enough to be in the same table with another player, or do not play there more than once a certain player SNG with so it makes it very difficult to be fully sure of the hand that account when the only reference that we are betting ranges from a few hands ... more alla of this the great players have a great virtue to make them though not always hit. And truth is very different so you can see a player being face to face that what you get on-line

If you are playing without a HUD and not collecting data on these players then you are playing handicapped.

I did not say you do, or I do not do ... only that it is difficult to obtain a perception of someone being that we only have seen him play a few hands ... There will be those with higher / lower ability to read hands, but is easier to achieve with increasing the number of hands of rival views: p ... Best Regards
