You've raised initially in late position and the button calls, everyone else folds.

You flop middle pair, the board looks good and you make a continuation bet of about 40-50% of the pot. Button insta calls.

Turn comes, low card. You have second best pair, with a decent kicker. You make a similar if not slightly larger continuation bet. Button insta calls.

River comes an over card, theres no flush or straight out there. Do you continue betting?

Of course this is all situational and dependant on your exact hand, but hands like this keep coming up. Whether it be with middle pair, low flushes, low end of straights. You make bets out of position and get insta called on the flop and turn.

What do you do on the river, checking looks like you've given up, and with a marginal hand a call could be difficult to make. And a bet could just be insta called when you're behind.

Perhaps theres something simple i'm missing here, I am fairly new to the game.

There's no single answer; it's player-dependent. Different players have different ranges with which they'd call on three streets, and they can also play differently if you check the river. Some will value bet, and how thin can differ. Some will usually bet their busted draws while others will never do so. Developing a feeling for what a particular person is likely to do is one example of poker's depth.

I see what your saying, I figured it's dependant upon situation. Perhaps I just need to work on my analytical abilities, thanks for the response (Y)

Pretty much that. But middle pair doesnt win very often at showdown. So typically you want to be bluff catching or charging draws, and keeping the pot small.

A good way to go for pot control following a pre-flop raise and then a CB on the flop is to check all turns and see how your opponent responds.
