Say you've limped in with some marginal hand, and hit the nuts. What do you do?

For example, I call the BB with Q-9 off-suit, and the flop comes Q-Q-5 rainbow. The action checks to me, I check, the table checks around. On the turn, another Q. The action checks to me, I check, the table checks around. Deuce on the river. When I finally bet, everyone folds.

Any strategies for maximizing payout in this sort of situation? Similar, say, to pocket aces on a tight table when there hasn't been any action? When any sort of bet seems like it's just going to scare the other players away?

I understand that every situation is unique, and that the action or lack thereof at the table simply depends on what other players are holding (i.e., in the above example, if someone happened to be holding a five or pocket 2's then perhaps I get paid). It's just, when this kind of thing happens, every now and then, I always feel so frustrated when I take down a tiny pot with quads. I'm probably only writing this because it just happened, that is, I'm venting.

But really: how does one play an obvious monster?

When theres many people in the pot, simply bet and hope someone calls. On the flop, you didn't have the nuts so checking would have been fine. However, you should have bet the turn and hope to get SOME value out of it. This is also a reason why you shouldn't get into limped pots, as you almost never get paid off unless the other person has a strong hand too.

in the hand you describe here, OP, i think its best to maybe minbet flop so you can get called by worse and when the ace hits and you feel someone now has queens over aces, you can always throw in an overbet cause chances are you will get paid. Wait for the gin card to come out that wont allow villains to fold and then bet accordingly.( how strong you feel villain is,and how much you think is the maximum he would be willing to call)

It happened to me last week. I was at SNG, had two deuces. Raised 3BB and get two limper behind me. Flop came 2 2 9. I raised 2BB and hoped I would get some callers. They unfortunately folded. I think I should check on the flop and make that small bet on the turn. :/ :D

First and foremost...who invented this poker term? Johnny had the NUTS...

To me the nuts is not fixed...what i mean is you could very well have the nuts on the flop...maybe even on the turn..river card comes...YOU LOST YOUR NUTS...

There is no CORRECT way to play the nuts in my opinion because one card can change it all

A lot of different factors go into how you should play ANY HAND...

As im sittin here typing I realize how long of a post this is going to be...and its all just my opinion...so if I say something that does not fit or i leave anything out...please post a reply and share your ideas

Some things to consider...

What will happen if I slowplay?
Will someone draw out on me?
What if I bet?
Will everyone fold?
What is my position?
Can I use it to my advantage?
What if I shove?
Will anyone call me thinking its is a bluff or chasing an out?
What is my playing style?
What is my opponents playing style?

Do I have any reads or stats on my opponents?
Are they likely to fold or call/raise?
Can you induce him to shove with an inferior hand?

Stack size?
Pot size?

I cant list ever detail cuz im a donk and dont want to give ALL my secrets... lol...

Any one care to add anything?

The answer to your question.... DON'T LIMP. Just don't do it bud... If you limp in with marginal hands... Good players will put in a big raise and u can't call because ur hand is marginal and they know that... Kiss your big blind goodbye. What should be happening here is you should raise premiums preflop and when u hit a flop hard... You shouldn't have all that much trouble getting value. Just 2/3 pot every street and go to value town... I'm guessing your playing lower stakes and ABC poker (bet hard when u got it, fold when u don't) should work just fine for you :)

Similar happened to me the other day, I had AJ, flop JJA, checked flop hoping someone else had an ace or jack and would bet, no bets, turn didn't change much, I check no bets, I bet the river they both fold. Sometimes your hand is just too good and sadly, no matter how much room you leave them, no-one else wants to play. Very frustrating.

If the board defines your hand, like on a nut flush, you might as well put a medium size bet looking for any action you can get. If I have a concealed hand, like a set, I will promote betting from the others and raise the turn and river. I also like to remind myself that a pair of Aces or Kings is never the nuts.
