Hey everyone:

I am new to poker and have had a lot of difficulty playing pocket Jacks. For instance, if its an unopen pot should I be re-raising? If its a raised pot, should I call or 3 bet? Here is an example of a hand that I had. Please let me know what you think of how I played it and what you would have done. Thanks.

Seat 3: VILLAIN #2 ($0.20 in chips)

I'm not qualified to comment on the hand analysis since I
am lucky to find the on button on my laptop, but for what
its worth there is an excellent lengthy post on how to play
JJ from about three months ago under Cash Games. Search
"Pocket Jacks" under thread posts.

There's no set rules on how you should play hands. It all depends on your opponents and position. However;

UTG limps for 2c, you're UTG +1 and you raise to 8c, next noob with a 10BB stack shoves. Folds to UTG who flat calls, then to you...

Firstly, what do you think UTG limps with? Then what do you think he flats a 3b with? Would he play AK/AA/KK/QQ like this? Undoubtedly the answer is no, so yes you should be 4betting pre to isolate the 10BB shove noob.

Norman here, I'd now ask you what you think 10BB guys shove range is, but bc he only had 10BB he won't really have one, and you can know that most of the time your premium pair is going to be crushing his range

Id say u played it ok til the turn you should have bet instead of checking or even a strong bet if you thought u were ahead still. At least u would have had a better idea of where u stood in the hand. Had he called quickly or reraised u would have known u were beat. By checkin in my opinion u lost the hand ur self. I wasnt in the hand so not sure if he was a loose player but if he wasnt and u made a healthy bet on turn he may not have chased it. I just personally hate letting people see a free card like i said even a small raise would have givin u more insight into his hand might have lost more by raising but by not raising u walked him into his hand for free. Only my opinion guys so dont blast me if u disagree lol.;)

thanks for the responses. The reason I flatted was because he was showing small pairs quite a few times in EP and flat calling any particular raise. Should I have just shoved to isolate? I felt like I was waayy ahead of the player who only had 10bbs left and that he would have shoved with any Ace based on previous hands.

Thanks for the response everyone. I definitely think I should have bet turn if I flat called the shove because of what hands I put the player on.

Would you have made the call on the river?

I like a 4 bet shove preflop to isolate. Its unlikely anyone would play a higher pocket pair or AK the way villain 1 has played up to now so he's gonna be folding most of the time i'd say and if not we're in good shape against almost all of his range.

Had I gone your line tho I would have shoved the turn.

Def call that ridiculously small river bet, you're getting like 9-1 (presuming its for both pots) worth it even if just to gain info on him.
