I've been playing some 2NL zoom and made $40 from it. Now I'm not sure if it was skill mixed with luck or all luck because now ive gone down to $35, yeah its not much but I'm worried about dropping alot more and losing what I have earned. How can I play out bad variance? Do I just keep playing or could I stop for a few weeks and come back to it? On pokertracker it says I'm a profitable player so lets hope it wasn't all luck that got me $40 haha. Also people have been folding preflop to my AA,KK and AK alot lately when I am doing a normal 3bb raise, is this part of bad variance also?

One more question. Why is it so bad to hit and run? I find in zoom poker with the massive swings I go from $5 to 0$ in a hundred hands or so. It could be that I maybe be playing looser but I swear that I'm playing the same. If I get a good hit of cash should I just leave? Maybe normal cash I wouldn't leave but I'm thinking of just leaving after a big win so I can't lose it all

My recommendation for combatting bad variance - QUIT playing right now, take a breather (maybe a few hours, maybe a few days) then come back only when you are feeling refreshed and confident. Never play when you're tired (unless of course you're already locked in to a tourney). Never play when you're frustrated. Never play when you're angry.

Cut and run - definitely do it. online poker is about as close to anonymous as you're going to get. Nobody cares if you do it - lots of people do it. In the end, it's your bankroll that you're concerned about. If you hang around when you don't really want to, you're setting yourself up to lose everything that you've just gained.

If people are folding to your AA or KK normal PF raise, think about it this way - AA and especially KK lose all the time. You just saved yourself your entire stack. Be happy!

It can be over come, but when you are in any of those moods that MattRyder has said, then you need a break. But every thing you play will, you have to think about your BR. I noticed you said you were down $5. The thoughts you should have is on winning not losing. GL to you

*beat variance - only two ways to do this...1 play a lot more 2. change the game you are playing - however there are ways to curb its effect
*stopping play will not change anything as it relates to variance, it can however help you calm down and gather your wits and make sure you are playing good
*hit and run in ZOOM is insignificant since you are running from every table every hand anyways, regular cash - well it is frowned upon but this is online so who cares
*maybe you play looser the more you win - look into that because that would not be good

lower effect of variance;
*dont play zoom
*play pot limit or limit instead of nl
*change to omaha or stud
*play 6 handed or heads up
*stay away from super big bets - try to use pot control betting (i know boring right?)
*play more tight/aggressive

Variance is variance. You can't outrun it and you can't time it. Just play solid poker, and don't tilt yourself out of your bankroll. And even though it really aggravates the people you beat, there is nothing wrong with crystallizing your winnings. Play too long trying to be a gentleman and you may just bust out.
