I won some money by placing first in a SNG tournament which I had a free ticket for, and I'd like to try build a small bankroll from this. Advice I've seen on the forum is to stick to your best game, however since I've played extremely few "real money" games, I don't know what my best game is (and if I won the SNG through pure luck).

Should I try play more "play money" games to try and determine what I'm best at, or does this not translate well to "real money" games? And if not, what's the best way to pick your best game without losing your bankroll in the process?

Thanks for any advice.

*Background on me:
I've only been playing poker for about a month, so I am a beginner. I've mainly played "play money" games and freerolls on pokerstars, and the only "real money" games I've played have been low-stakes games with free tickets or with money I've won in freerolls.

Your best game is the one where you run into the least amount of difficult decisions. If you feel like you have a good idea of what to do in most spots in a SNG, but you have a real tough time playing the turn in deep-stacked 6-max cash games, you would consider the SNG the better game. It would be the one you understand and play the best.

How do you know for sure? That takes a lot of time. Generally, you want to pick one format and stick to that, when first learning, and get as good as you can in it. Then you can experiment with other forms.

I think you look at your results and make sure you have a good sample size, but sometimes you will find it may be a game you dont enjoy as much. The other thing to think about is you should be looking at win per hr not just roi.

When should you venture out into the different games?

build it up first

if your starting with a very small bank roll from a sit and go you might want to consider a few double up sit and go tourneys to build a little more bankroll . you only have to come in top 50 % to cash and you make a little less but have a better chance . after you get a bigger bankroll try some small buy in cash , sit and go , and MTT to see where you are most comfortable .
