Hey everyone, hope your doing well. I'm just looking for some advice on how to get myself off tilt. I hit a string of painfully bad beats three days ago and since then I've been playing very erratically and uncontrollably. I am not making good decisions and am clearly still Tilting (thankfully I'm only down $9 right now), so I suspended myself for yesterday to try and get away, but now that my self-imposed suspension is up, I find myself still dangerously itching to play. So I've been getting by playing some play-chip games to try and get my self back in the right state of mind, but these games are, by the nature of play chips, very insane and most people don't play them right, making things confusing.

I don't want to step away from poker all together, but would that be the best thing to until I can get back on track? or anyone else have some other ideas?

I usally prepare "bad beat candy" when I feel I am on tilt.
Then I decide in advance what to play (usally MTT's), and once I am out, I dont touch my computer more that day.

Well, you could try just playing through it, but if your not trying to risk losing alot more cash, i suggest just play a few freerolls or something along that lines, I'm sure you'll end up feeling better about everything if you take out a few donks who are trying to chase everything with nothing.

stop playing for a bit

Stop playing your normal game and play something else for a minute. Free chips, low limits, whatever. It will take your mind off the bad beats, especially if you're learning a new game.

You can play your normal game if you don't make mistakes. Bad beats are okay because they even out in the long run ( unless you lose your bank roll) If you can control your emotions and accept it, you will continue to be okay. Voice of experience here. I went on a losing streak last year and lost half of my bankroll. I decided to quit playing cash games for a while and farted around with freerolls and didn't win much to speak of. I then decided to get back in the cash games and doubled my original bankroll. When I looked at what I did, I realized that I blew almost two months of poker by getting bent out of shape over a losing streak.

You should definitly stop playing for a while. When you go on tilt you really
cant control yourself, few people can. By leaving the table, your taking
your first step to self control. Ofcourse your gonna have bad beats in your
lifetime, i mean its destiny! but what separates the good players from the
bad is how they take those bad beats. Some people are soo good at controling
themselves that they can keep focused and forget about it in a minute.
This takes a lot of self control, something every poker player wishes he
or she could have. What i recommend is you stop going for a while, and
when you get back, keep reminding yourself that its a part of the game.

I agree with PoolBoy. I was there last week. Lost my whole bank. I was running good for a week and could not see I was running bad the next week. I never went on tilt, but the beats I was getting made my retarded mind think "rigged" again. LOL. Well I reverted back to freerolls and I placed in the CC tonight. My game is a lot better than last year, but you only get better if you can step back and look at the hands you lost and decide what could I have done to win the hand. If nothing, then you know you played it the best way possible, but if you see a small flaw in the play of the hand, analyze the hand for later play with similar circumstances. X

Step back and gather your Thoughts.
Get your head straight and when you feel your back into it, sit down and show em how you play.

Tilt

Hey,

First post on the site. Great site btw. I go on tilt extremely easily.. Like, when someone has a ridiculous starting hand, and for some reason calls a raise pre flop with 6 other players in the hand and sucks out... I get pissed lol.

I've found the best way to get off tilt (works best for me anyways) is get off of the computer, and I'll do some pushups and situps for a while, drink some water, clear my head and come online and read poker articles and watch some vids on youtube and then after a while when I'm in a more positive state of mind I'll go back and play more. Give it a shot.

Don't play with so much money on the table that anything bothers you. Someone getting lucky against you should make you laugh or at least feel good that you got them to make a mistake. You'll win in the long run. If you are the one getting lucky, then that might be a little embarrassing. I'm not sure how to handle that.

Get used to it, accept that it will happen from time to time and most importantly don't get so emotional about a bad beat. It happens to all of us, the big difference is in how we let it affect us.

A few memtioned playing some freerolls, there is a surefire way to take a bunch of bad beats to help you get used to the feeling. Make sure you play them with the same mind set as your regular game or they won't help a bit.

Nothing special really. Just prepare some candy that I am not allowed to eat until I have tilted myself out, or taken a bad beat.
Then eat my candy and watch tv with my gf rest of the evening. Always make me feel better, and I get the feeling I am a lucky person after all. (yes there is a world outside poker ;P)

as soon as you start thinking "what the hell cant beat em so join em" and start playing hands you know you shouldnt be playing, its time to step away from the game and find something to do for a week and come back. nothing good can come out of trying to play through it, take a break!!

i used to go on tilt a lot, but now it's not very often that i find myself incapable of playing well because of it. like everyone has said, take a break. once you notice that you're playing differently, you should stop. only go back to play once you know you aren't still upset. another thing i like to do is play a different game. i know most people play only holdem, but you should try playing something like razz or stud. it's a totally different game and will make you think differently. i find that helps get me off tilt pretty fast because of the difference in play. gl in figuring this out!

you got to keep playing, one thing ask yourself is, have you started to play differently at all. Think back at the last 10 tournies, and how you went out. If you find yourself thinking about a lot of coinflips or against over pairs, then tighten up maybe read something about poker. But if your going all in with KK and losing to 66 your just running bad, it'll turn around stay with it, as long as your puttin your money in good, you'll be fine.
also read the book, "the poker mindset"

I'm in the same boat, having a run of bad luck for the last month and losing to 2-outers, gut-shot draws, and runner-runner flushes. I'm surprised it took so long but I have decided to play in some freerolls, even though a long time ago I said I wouldn't play in them because of the donks and sitters. Hearing this forum has good freerolls I decided to join - now I have to get posting.

best way i think

Well i find that usually after a bad beat when you win a descent hand
afterward will usually put me back in the right state of mind to keep on
playing and get off tilt. Its kinda a confidence boost after you win and
you feel you can keep on playing a good game. If that doesnt work then
you need to just take a break until you feel like playing a GOODGAME, Not
just playing poker itself. When you really want to play, you usually play
better i find.

I hope this helps you out in the long run

Taking a break is good. Workout...relax for a bit. Getting out of your house is a MUST. As long as your computer is easily accessible it will tempt you back.
