How much money did you lose, if any, until you became a winning player?

umm I've probably lost like 6.5k in tournament winnings in 2 years, from bad bankroll management and just like taking big risks playing in the high buy in mtt's and not picking the right games, playing when I shouldn't be playing and over playing,
pretty silly really, but I know had I been patient and sensible It could of been consistantly growing just maybe not to the extent I would of hoped (5 figure a year etc)

I figured it would take years to make a substantial sum of money so I was prepared to take those risks in order to get a bankroll most only dream of. I came close to a couple of big FT cashes and went deep in the sunday million 2 or 3 times.

but all in all resulted in being a losing player over the 2 years up until jan

I think it can easily take 1k before you find your niche, but that's when you have it and tend to take a lot of chances and especially not knowing which games are good for you. It is easier to get overwhelmed gambling essentially when you join an online poker room and there are so many different games and such that you can partake in

I was fortunate enough to start playing several years ago when there was a lot more freeroll money available. I initially put $150 into an e-wallet to bankroll myself, but almost immediately won $150 a freeroll. I managed to make at least a small profit each month despite being new and not knowing much, so was I never down and never actually used any of my original $150 to play.

I am in plus with money and that's for sure because on the other way I wouldn't play poler at all, I would stop like this game in that case.

Before I read strategy, like going back 10 years ago, I'd regualry deposit $100-$200 per week for fun and play like 100nl/200nl. Needless to say, I lost a load. Probably several k.

Since I joined CC and learned the game; I've lost a few bankrolls, ranging from $50 and upto $1k (tilt played HUSNG) but my winnings by far out weigh losses to date and I'm around $10k since joining cc.

my first and second year I won enough money playing poker online about 1 year come not getting any profit losses so ago to lose by not respecting the bankroll.decidi about one month only play tournaments with buy in less than 5 dls, and avoid playing cash games and where they've been getting many losses in tables 1-2 and texas omaha 0.50 -1 dls, until then I've been getting good results in tournaments but nothing spectacular no victory for now let's see if this month we managed to great victory in any of them.

:). I was pretty much the same why when I first started playing online about 7 years ago. In the first two years I was probably down about 3K, because I was learning, and I was doing pretty good. I'd win quite a few then loose a lot, but I felt I was really learning a lot. I'd say as long as you're not putting yourself in the poor house, and you're learning a lot and not letting lost money go in vein then being down a few thousand over your first year or two isn't too bad. I used to feel bad about it, but then I'd remember that there are players who have lost what I've lost over the period of two years within two minutes. The key thing about losing your money when you first start playing is making sure that you're using that play as a BIG learning tool. Consider it your tuition fee in a course for the greatest job you'll ever have. Therefore you really have to think about your first loses as "poker college". Every poker play has losses when they first start, even though a couple of posts on this thread prove that wrong, it is still relatively true for all players.

That is pretty good way of looking at it, I mean we cant gaurantee myself or anyone will be making a big amount of money at the end of it but it will definately improve your game.

Are you making much nowadays? and what sort of games tables do you play?

I'm determined to drill in information I treat it like a training drill, you have to keep going over the same things to stay sharp = like an athlete does,
ive been reading the same books for 18 months and I want it to become second nature every little detail they know I want to know,
and also watch alot of good videos and i'll recap if I cant remember it inside out,
or if i feel im slacking in an area I'll spend a week focused on that part of my game

I lost a little when i first started. But back then there were dozens of good sites that offered amazing bonuses(could clear $100 in afew hours 4 tabling 25nl) so i was able to stay a little better than even.

I lost about $1000 playing MTT with bye-in from $30 and above. Now I play on smaller limits and already in small plus. The most big prize about $2000 bye-in $10

Howdy mspoker. Simple question for sure, many players can certainly say little to no money was invested to become a winning player in the case of building up a br from nothing playing in the freerolls.

Some perhaps, like myself unfortunatly, have over the years invested and lost way too much before realizing its time to give up on the tilt and simple focus of regaining lost funds (as just caused a deeper hole to get out of) and focus on a grind to improve their game and hope that some day to get onto the track of being a winning player.

I have a long ways to go to be a "winning player" by all means of the word, I play a good game when I play a good game but in the past let losses tilt me too much that I would spew and donk to try and get back to even. Not a good approach by no means, sure could be some stories out there of it happening with taking xx amount to xxxx amount in a session but again its the risk of going further down.

So long story short, you don't have to invest any money to have a learning period or at all if you can play through freerolls and build slowely. Volume is a great learning experience as well as being active and getting feedback on posts from forums such as cardschat.

Good luck on the felts and your learning experience.

Thanks,
bluff

all depends, some guys may have a tourney they won 14k and then lose it all is that a winning player? clearly not, I have lost money I know that but not big amounts a few hundread bucks id say. Nothing crazy like 25k or anything. But ive also won little tourneys and lots of SnGs. I just wanna hit that big tourney pay out and cash lol

It really depends on how quick you learn from your mistakes its not really an amount some people might lose a fortune playing poker and still not realize what they were doing wrong the whole entire time.

Im still learning/loosing so i dont know how much money ill lose before i become winning player but so far i wasted 25$ free money from YPC on party poker and 25$ free money on bwin, 10$ free from pokerstrategy on 770poker still struggling with wh and pokerstars so i lost about 60$ so far but never deposited a dime in any poker room..

Me and my friend used to play $50 heads up sitn gos. We both weren't the best. One day he got really aggressive and would start way over betting the pot, raise every hand. I knew it was good to be aggressive but I felt like I could out play him and wait for my cards and let him bet into me hard. It worked cause he thought he was doing the right thing and we played this way. But me and my other friend would play cash heads up, but we didn't have a limit set, so 1 hand I went from being up $1,000 to being down $1,000. I hate poker. It blows.

You test how much you are learning by playing against better players. That usually means spending some money to buy into those next-level-up games. When starting out a lot of people get this money by grinding freerolls and low stakes sng/cash, so if you have the time and the patience (and luck) it doesn't have to cost you a lot. But if you can afford it, and don't begrudge the money, why not just skip the grinding !

I figure that as i get better the freeroll and sng money will come quicker so i'll be entering more next-level games as time goes on. I've only been playing a year and a bit but i've won more money in the second 6 mths than the first, so hopefully this means i'm getting to be a better player and going (very) slowly in the right direction.

As a beginner or as a player whose game is still at that stage, you should only play with money that you can lose and it won't matter, either monetarily or emotionally / mentally. How much this is can vary hugely from person to person. So if I said I lost $X, this wouldn't be very meaningful without knowing the full context in which it happened.
